903 KHA was 1959 Smethwick issue, suggesting this started with Midland Red. Surprisingly the plate does still have a record, which eventually comes up on DVLA under Other => BMMO: Date of Liability 06 10 1983 Date of First Registration 02 01 1961 Year of Manufacture Not Available Cylinder Capacity (cc) Not Available CO2 Emissions Not Available Fuel Type HEAVY OIL Export Marker N Vehicle Status Unlicensed Vehicle Colour RED Vehicle Type Approval Not Available The 1968+ Imp Californian in front is infinitely more interesting, but no better view. |

BMMO D9, 1958+. After Midland Red retired the D9s a number passed to London Transport for decapitation. Here's another, which has come home: http://www.bammot.org.uk/vehicles/v3016ha.asp |

903 KHA, one of the first batch of 10 1/2 litre BMMO D9s, entered service in Redditch in January 1961, and was withdrawn in December 1974, and converted to open top by LPC Coachworks of Hounslow, Middlesex. The bus, with its six open top brethren, was the first attempt at the use of such vehicles for sightseeing tours of London. The operation was the brainchild of the late Prince Marshall, and was known as "The Obsolete Fleet". It worked from Stockwell garage, beginning on 26 April 1975. The operation was closed down by LT in 1982 following the death of Prince Marshall. This bus may still be in operation by Mauritius Brauerei, of Zwickau, Germany. The class, nicknamed "Birmingham's Routemaster", was entirely the design of the BMMO including the engine, and 345 were built by the company, on Metal Sections frames, the last 45 being finished by Willowbrook due to other work at the company's plant. These buses were innovative in their early use of disc brakes (later reverting to drums as the disc pads gave a short life) and rubber suspension, together with a set-back front "axle" to give a smaller turning circle. How a small mass produced car from Scotland can be more interesting than this beats me! http://midlandred.net/pix/bmmo/d9/4903/01.shtml http://midlandred.net/pix/bmmo/d9/4903/04.shtml -- Last edit: 2013-06-25 22:52:14 |
