what is the difference between this one and the 1959 coupe deVille ? |

The Cadillac "Coupe de Ville" always was a 2-door hardtop (no "B" pillar" - c.a.d sans montant entre glace AV et glace AR). It was introduced to the range at the end of 1949 and was basically just a more spacious and luxurious version of the reglar "coupe". Of course Cadillac copy-writers borrowed the French "coupe de ville" body style, without knowing what it really meant (i.e. a "town car", or "sedanca" in the UK). In 1954, they built a custom 4-door "de Ville" sedan that became a regular production model in 1956 (the renowned "Sedan de Ville". The "de Ville" extension denoted a model group featuring more luxurious interior finish than on the regular "sedan" and "coupe" styles. As to the image (above), from the movie, this is Cadillac's regular "Series 62" convertible for 1959 ("cabriolet" en francais). In 1965, the company divided their model range into three new series: "Calais" [entry category], "De Ville" [mid-range cars] and "Fleetwood" [high-end models]. The convertible was then included in the "De Ville" range. To me, that was still a logical step towards naming Cadillac models in a rational way. But when the old school {la vieille ecole) retired in the seventies, things became far less rational. For me, it was illogical to give the name "Seville" to a 4-door model (in 1975) and the name "Biarritz" to a CLOSED car (in 1979). IMHO, things got worse for Cadillac's "image", when the "Escalade" SUV was introduced in the new millennium [do the copy-writers even know what it means: a steep climb, as of a cliff e.g.]. Since then, it has been downhill for the Cadillac "image", culminating in those ridiculous 3-letter model designations like STS, DTS, SRX, CTS, XLR etc. These may be OK on the back of 2-seater sports cars ...they are OUT OF PLACE on a marque that gained prestige as America's TOP luxury car in the 20s and retained that position for half a century. Maybe I'm getting old ! |

Agreed 100%. Part of the problem is that everyone thinks that Cadillac is supposed to be competitive with "sports sedans" like BMW. They completely different types of cars. |
