I thought Carolina was meant to be a nice sunny place - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LFqWIKayIE .

North Carolina is a scenic place, with a unique semi-tropical climate, land topography, and pristine coastline.

But, the land (and water that borders it) that is now known as North Carolina has always been shrouded in mystery ever since the first settlers came here. Newcomers from Europe and England (like the Scotch-Irish) reported strange sightings, things they could not explain, creatures never before seen…

Mythical creatures like the Altamaha-Ha, Bigfoot, Land Devil, The Devil, Forest Wanderers, etcetera.

There are lots of stories in North Carolina (more so than other areas and states) where people have gone missing and are never heard from again. North Carolina’s extremely dense forests, hazy mountains, and humid climate probably help in making people see things that are not really there. Bears and other native wildlife are probably responsible for people who go missing in heavily wooded areas.

Also lots of superstition surrounding the coastal waters of North Carolina as they are known as the "Graveyard of the Atlantic" where a great many ships have been lost due to unknown or unexplainable reasons. Like the ill-fated Carroll A. Deering, a five-masted commercial vessel found mysteriously abandoned in 1921. Just one of many North Carolina mysteries.

While I don’t believe in all those stories, most are genuinely mysterious, so I don’t go into the woods alone... :D

So it's a bit like in the famous movie "Deliverance" (although that movie was mostly shot in Georgia and South Carolina AFAIK)? :D

I guess so  , but its not the people I would be scared of... a NC bear or mountain lion won’t make you squeal like a pig. Well, actually, they might, when they attack you. :D

Are they really so strange or unusual to be placed in one row with mr... bigfoot? A bit of respect(!) :o would be welcome.

No mermaids ever reported (as far as I know), but we do have The Siren and North Carolina Faeries.
