Why have such a unknown car in a movie like this, it's not being played for a laugh, which has been done in the past.

It is played for laughs a little bit as the ditzy girls from the factory drive it.

For export to the USA: every pre-1946 Topolino had got black bumpers if for Italy, this has got higher headlights and bumpers, plus a different hood opening system.
This is at least the second Topolino I see in USA in a film. I remember another in "Quella carogna dell'ispettore Sterling".

To Portacker, this was not an unknown car as they were imported to the US and were well known. Many of the early hotrods in the 50's were junk yard 500's with the 4 cylinder's replaced by American V-8's. You can still buy fiberglass replica' for hot rodding as the original supply has long run out. Plus the car serves as comic relief as it was only a 2 seater, fitting four people in a car built for two.
