In the original actual police footage, the Arizona Highway Patrol stated that the Corvette was stolen off the showroom floor at a car dealership in Phoenix, Arizona, a few hours earlier and that the Corvette was doing about 165mph (265km/h) when the thief, Jared Fitzgerald had lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the back corner of the semi-trailer. The impact of the Corvette crashing into the back of the trailer was so great, that it was enough to eject Fitzgerald from the vehicle. Despite being ejected from the vehicle, Fitzgerald had escaped with no injuries.
