Although the vehicle was developed by Alkett, it was built by Deutsche Eisenwerke ("German Iron Works"), a group of iron works in the Ruhr Area.

The "Nashorn" ("Rhinoceros") name was taken for this tank because Hitler disliked the original designation "Hornisse" ("Hornet").
