Pleased to see this identified - I watched this in the opening sequence of the 1st episode and could not decide what it was.

It is a series 80 from the mid 1970s. As far as I know the UK only got the six cylinder models (MS85 - the same as NZ) whereas I believe in Europe some fours (RS80) were sold.

Is it the same as in the original film?

Yes UK Crowns always sixcyl [!?!] since July 1968 MS55 to final imports Sept 83 [MS85HGW?]. Plain MS85 saloon introduced May 75. But I've no idea what these all looked like. Is this one therefore a May 75+ MS85 similar to the NZ version (though different colour from original film)?

I reckon so - in general terms. In NZ we had a plain Deluxe model which was locally assembled. (In the after market parts reference books it is referred to only as the MS series.) As well it was possible to buy fully imported Super Saloons. As far as I know there were no imports of wagons or coupes in this series. I think the UK models were all Super Saloons?

For UK: MS85 saloons all recorded as Super, MS88 estates as deluxe Oct 75-autumn 76 - replaced by MS83 Custom estates Oct 76 onwards. Coupes only in MS75 series June 71-May 75.

The coupes of that 80-100 series seem to be very rare. I have only ever found one pic of one in Japan (it is on this page, I see I found it on 2001 - http://classicrown.multiply.com/photos/album/8/1974-10_to_1979-08) and there was one for sale in Australia some years ago. Quite a few of the MS75 series were sold new in NZ and there were quite a few MS110/112 coupes imported second hand from Japan in the late '80s/early '90s. I have an MS112 Royal Saloon two door coupe which was imported here in 1990.

I'll bet it is (but this is just a hunch)

IIRC the car onscreen was blue, unlike the original film (silver).

The car in the film was banger raced in 2009, the owner of the car at the time of the film was indeed a banger driver, you can see in the film that car must have been in a bad state...silver tape over the arches and along the door sills.

The films also has a few more Ford Granadas in the background, at a guess, i'd say the owners were some how related to the banger racing scene.
