Appears to be a 1964 220 S according to the museum website. I've heard of this car. I don't remember the exact details, but it was modified for use for some kind of testing purposes. http://www.museum-mercedes-benz.com/download.php/en/229 |

Classic & Sports Car magazine had a photo of this in October 2009 issue (p242). It's the car behind which is important - a coachbuilt Adenauer W189 300 "Messwagen" converted into a mobile testing laboratory and connected to the car being tested by wires as it followed it round the track recording sensor readings etc. Used from 1961 until some point in the 1970s, presumably when the technology emerged to transmit this data wirelessly. The C&S picture shows a later 220 with similar roof bars to the picture above, but the significance of the picture is the 2 cars together. |

There we go. I knew it was something like that. When I first heard about it, I remember being impressed by the idea of the big heavy station wagon following a sedan so closely during high-speed testing. http://www.museum-mercedes-benz.com/download.php/en/228 |
