It's actually quite accurate for such an old car to have been used as an academy vehicle. |

I heard that taxi companys in the USA "re-use" the old Caprice because they are not happy with the new cars. I don't know if this is true, I only heard it somewhere. |

As far as I know they have been plenty happy with the Crown Victoria. It's been years since I saw a Caprice taxi. Maybe in smaller towns and in small taxi companies but that certainly isn't the case in general. |

Isn't there a law in New York City, that taxis have to be not older than 3 years? I've read it somewhere here. If yes, does other US communities have a similar regulation? |

NYC does have a law like that, but I believe that it is now longer than 3 years. I don't know about other municipalities but I decided to check up on the rules for the city of Los Angeles. For the 9 franchise taxi companies authorized by the city (LA does not have one company like NYC), this is the rule: "No taxicab shall be in excess of five years of age except that the vehicles placed into taxicab service prior to January 1, 2011, and any Level 2 rated Green Taxi may be used in taxicab service for four additional one-year periods (to the 9th anniversary date of the model year) provided the vehicle is inspected either six months prior to or after the end of the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth years by a mechanic or garage approved by the Department and not affiliated with the taxicab operator." |

A propos "Green Taxi". This company from Bremen makes PR with "Clean Air Taxi", because they use LPG-powered cars and not -as mostly common in Germany Diesel-cars. Link to "www.14433.de" I'm not sure, but AFAIK it's the only Crown Victoria and the only Dodge Magnum in taxi-use here. Chrysler 300 C, also the PT Cruiser are sometimes to see here, in other towns as taxis, but then with Diesel-engines. -- Last edit: 2011-04-08 22:43:53 |
