10.000 Golfs were imported to GDR in 1977/78. |

And except that deal of the GDR-government (as the Mazda 323, the citroen GSA and the Volvo 244, too) the Golf I and later Golf II could be ordered by relatives in Western Germany for GDR-citizens. The company was named GENEX, a GDR-owned import/export-company, located in Copenhagen and Zürich. The dependance in Copenhagen was named Jauerfood AG. The prices had to be paid in D-Mark, so the cars were delivered immediately. The whole range of COMECON-cars, which were offered in the GDR, was available at the GENEX, also some Western made models. I own some GENEX-catalogues in my GDR-literature-collection. Their prices at eBay are fu..ing high nowadays. btw.: it was strictly illegal to bring a GENEX-catalogue into the GDR! Even the most products were GDR-made. The reason was, that the GDR-people shuld not know, what were the prices of their own made good in the "real", the Western world. In 1978 the GENEX had offered that Western cars: - VW Golf I - Volvo 343 - Fiat 131 S (Fiat, not Polski Fiat) - Volvo 244 - Volvo 264 1988: - Yamaha XJ 600 (more Yamaha's on request) - Ford Orion CL - VW Golf II C - VW Golf II CL - BMW 318i - Renault 9 - Peugeot 309 - Fiat Uno - VW T3 Transporter Kombi (Tansporter with windows and back seats) 1989: - as the 1988-programme plus the VW Passat CL and Passat CL Variant [35i] 1990 (released a few weeks before the Wall felt down): - Yamaha XJ 600; XJ 900 F; FJ 1200; XTZ 750 "Super Ténéré" - Renault 5 GTR - Fiat Tipo - Ford Orion CL - BMW 316i; 318i; 320i - Golf II CL and CL plus (CL plus?, never heard about it) - Passat CL and Passat Variant CL And the Lada Niva was available, too. Usually it was not possible for regular GDR-citizens to buy a Niva. Sorry, I just own these few catalogues. Perhaps I'll find some more (but for reasonable prices). And I remember, that one guy has tried once to spent his GDR-relatives a Ferrari 328. This was not possible. |

CL plus seems to be some edition for Swiss market only. |

P.S.The colour of the two Golf is "manilagreen", very popular in the VW/Audi-range around 1977-80. My father had a 1977 Audi 80 GLS in this colour. |

For the English speakers: similar as in old western-movies, where the bad guys always wear black hats, in GDR-made movies the bad or suspicious guys were driving Western cars. |

Entirely like in soviet films (even better - not only western cars, but all non-soviet). -- Last edit: 2009-10-24 18:27:40 |
