The 450 SEL 6.9 was 1975-1979. For USA 1976-80. -- Last edit: 2006-12-09 19:18:54 (benny) |

Link to "www.hampstead.com.au" This link says that it, in the movie, was tuned to 1400 hp! I will see this movie... |

Underhood shot showed a huge OHV V8 (probably a Chevrolet) with all kinds of wild components. 1400 horsepower would certainly be possible, but it would be impossible to keep the car looking this stock on the outside. |

The final scene with the police in pursuit. 1400bhp!![]() |

The car was not able to have a 690 nomination for a simple reason. By the time of it's production the Mercedes 600 (W100) was also in the MB range and was the industrie's flagship by all means, a "simple" S-class sedan would never overtake it even in terms of terminology..! |

I'm not sure I follow what you're saying. The underhood shot of the car definitely does not depict a Mercedes V8. The components seen are more in line with what would be seen on a NHRA top-fuel dragster...hence, a U.S.-sourced OHV V8 of some kind. If the car is supposed to have 1400 hp, that swap would definitely make sense. However, the car actually used in the film undoubtedly still carried its original Mercedes V8. |

Interesting, that this one combine US bumpers and Eure headlights. |

Okay so some people are a bit confused, so let me explain as I have not only seen this movie... I love it! The car pictured is a radically customized Mercedes built for a mobster named Mister Eddy. He loves to take it for slow country drives, and in the film he's shown driving it only about thirty five miles an hour when the Thunderbird begins to tailgate him. Being nice about it, he waves the tailgater around who then gives him the finger. As if on cue before Eddy ever says anything, everyone (except the main character) puts on their seatbelts, as Mister Eddy explains that "This is where mechanical excellence and one thousand four hundred horsepower pays off." He then punches the accelerator and the Mercedes goes from 35 to 160 in one second, rocketing up the road and smashing into the speeding Thunderbird like it wasn't even there, pushing the car off the road where Mister Eddy and his thugs proceed to beat the living stupid out of the Thunderbird driver and explain to him that at thirty five miles an hour it takes six car lengths to quit moving if you attempt to suddenly stop. When smashing this Thunderbird up, the car doesn't even get a scratch, so I imagine fictionally it was built to be bullet and crash proof, the perfect mobster car. I wish someone could get a picture of the engine itself, since it's been a long time since I've actually seen the film, and I'm curious because I always thought to me it looked like a high performance V8 from a LeMans race car, since it's a motorsport that has a lot of Mercedes in it. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Notice the speedometer is in kilometres per hour, although it might not actually be from this car (like the engine clearly isn't) |
◊ 2011-06-22 21:31 |
The speedometer can be from this car. It's a Mercedes-part and the socket around are looking W116-ish. And you can see on the right, the smaller rev counter, which only the versions with the biggest engines had. |
◊ 2011-06-22 21:33 |
P.S. The engine is something different for sure. The original: Link to "bringatrailer.com" -- Last edit: 2011-06-22 21:33:38 |

We also have combo of US bumpers and Euro headlights. |
◊ 2011-06-22 21:35 |
Because it accelerates so quickly, they probably took it out of the car to use something to move the needle, they could have taken the speedo out of another S-Class (rather than mess around with the car they needed to use for filming). I just think it's a possibility. -- Last edit: 2011-06-22 21:36:53 |

I was thinking about possibility of increasing speed of playback to show acceleration. |

The Califorina Smog Test site gives the year for this car (Reg. FBA6100) as 1977. |
◊ 2011-06-23 07:17 |
According to wikipedia it's a 417 cubic inches engine measuring 6.8 liters. Wonder why M-B didn't just label it "6.8"? What would be the harm? :/: |
◊ 2011-06-23 07:24 |
So if that speedo is from the main picture car, it would make the main picture car a grey market import? |
◊ 2011-06-23 07:28 |
Wikipedia said the 6.9 badge could be deleted by the factory, perhaps for hiding from stoplight challenges or prying eyes of law enforcement. |
◊ 2011-06-23 15:23 |
Also Nightrider said this has European headlights. Although the bumpers are still US, maybe by law they have to be (what a bullshit impudence to like this have it, as Ingo would say ![]() -- Last edit: 2011-06-23 15:41:35 |

In movie context US bumpers prove itself to be useful during ramming of T-bird... |

Since the early 70ies it was at Mercedes Benz (at BMW, too), an extra option -for a bit extra charge!- to get the car badge-free on the back. All models, not only the 6.3 or 6.9 -- Last edit: 2011-06-23 17:41:40 |
◊ 2011-06-23 19:00 |
This may sound like wanting to show off, but if I spent the money on a top of the range Mercedes I'd want to keep the badge on the back so it didn't just look like a bog standard one costing half the price ![]() Anyway, should we assume it's a European import and take the "made for USA" tag off? -- Last edit: 2011-06-23 19:02:10 |

It was -still is- common for customers, who like understatement, resp. doesn't want to show, that they have the most expennsive -so worth to steal- version. Also liked by the buyers of the poverty-spec (to quote dsl) trim-lines, in the hope, that clueless people classify the crummy 280 S nearby a 6.9. And there are a few eccentrics, whose 6.3 or 6.9 are naked in the back, but have a jalousie on the hatrack, where Link to "www.m-100.cc" is shown ![]() ![]() P.S. My promise: when I ever would be able to buy my dream car, the 6.3, I will replace the original badges with "200 Diesel automatic". And will mount such a jalousie ![]() |

Shall mean: without a badge a 6.3 or 6.9 looks for the most contemporaries just like an ancient old Benz. A lame oldtimer, you can shove way from the left lane. A few seconds before full throttle, you run up the jalousie. The torque curve is a bit more pretentious than just a "6289 ccm" |

I still don't really know what you trying to say in your previous comment, but maybe I should just leave it. |
◊ 2011-06-23 19:39 |
I mean the -on the German Autobahn quite common- situation, that someone is hanging on your back bumper and wants to shove you away from the left lane, because he wants to go faster (yes, it's illegal, but happens hundreds of thousands times every day). In this specific case, when you as a 6.3- or 6.9-driver have such a clown hanging in your neck, you can show hom with this, what's up with the shabby Benz in front of him - and then let him eat your dust. "More pretentious" means, that less people can read a torque curve than to realise, that 6.3 liters are not typical for an alleged lame old Benz. And that they are much more than the modern plastic-junk has. |
◊ 2011-06-23 19:44 |
OK, right, I think I see what you're trying to say now. |

I've finally ID'd the engine in this car: It's a Duttweiler-built drag-spec Buick 3.8 turbo V6. If you look closely at the engine shot, you can even barely see where it says "Buick" at the bottom of the valve cover. 1,400 horsepower is fairly accurate to the output of such a build. -- Last edit: 2022-01-06 07:33:29 |
