It's clearly set in an Asian nation, but it's also almost certainly filmed in the US; note the Chevrolet van and the Ford Explorer farther back.

It's supposed to be South Korea. I don't think that any Japanese cars are sold new there.

Indeed probably filmed in the US, but Chevy Van do not seem to rare in Korea (we had several in movies). About Japanese cars, that's quite possible indeed that they are not sold in Korea...

Does not look like Daihatsu 'D' either, so, it can't be Daihatsu Altis.

You think they would have used Korean cars in a scene that was supposed to be set in Korea.

I agree. How hard would have been to find some Hyundais and Kias?

I don't recall ever seeing a Ford Focus, Ford Taurus, Chevrolet Express, and a Ford Explorer anywahere in Asia...

Come to think of it the only true non-American car in this shot is the Hyundai taxi!

By the way, the Camry is a 1997-99 model. I think it's also a "Special Edition" by the gold badging

And most Lost viewers know that almost the whole series is shot on location in Hawai'i.

The silver taxi is a Daewoo Leganza.

Gold badging could be a dealer installed aftermarket package added on to pad the dealer's profits.

For the Camrys gold badging is a legimate factory option. I've seen tons of them, mostly of the third (1992-96) and fourth (1997-2001) generation.

This is somewhat off-topic, but I once saw a dreadful 1980s American action movie set in Korea, called The Rescue. Some American special forces soldiers are captured by the Evil Communist North Koreans, and the spineless politicians in Washington are for some reason reluctant to rescue them, which would only entail invading North Korea. So the soldiers' children take matters into their own hands. Overhearing an intelligence briefing, they learn exactly where the prisoners are being held. Then they hook up with the Seoul mafia, who provide a boat to sneak them into the North. The patriotic superteens then attack the curiously small and isolated prison and free the Americans, and they all fly away to Freedom in an old North Korean plane. :)

Most of it, I learned from the IMDB, was filmed in New Zealand, with an excursion to Hong Kong and Macau for scenes in Seoul and a North Korean fishing village. (Never mind that Chinese and Korean architecture are different, it's all Asian.) Because of where they were filming, they had all the cars driving on the left, and the American soldiers' personal cars were all 1950s American classics in right hand drive. I think that the North Koreans drove Land Cruisers.

That explain why "The Rescue" has right hand drive 1961 Plymouth vehicle were being filmed in New Zealand. I was puzzled where they filmed supposedly set in South Korea.

Having North Koreans drive Land Cruisers is not really inaccurate. Used Japanese cars were imported to North Korea until Japan imposed a trade embargo following missile tests. (Most cars are now imported from China or assembled domestically from CKD kits).
