Would've been called a "Beetle" or "Kewer" (Afrikaans) in ZA althoughgh it would just just have been branded VW1300 (which I guess it is) or VW1500 (or am I too early?). This looks to be a 1963-1965 one, judge by the rear bumper combination with the slats below the rear window. |

In Europe it wasn't before m.y 1966 that there was a writing on the engine lid... In 1966 it was '1300' or '1200', in 1967 'VW 1300' or 'VW 1500'. In 1968 the bumpers were different. So I guess this is rather a 1967 model... |

"VW" was never written on a Volkswagen Typ 1. In Europe "1300", "1500" or other model-types, but never in the combination with "VW". On the later Typ 3 it was written "VW Variant", that's all. The badge "Volkswagen was -except on the Typ 2 Bus- originally only used for the US market. Eeh, I forgot: the early Typ 3 1500 "Shortnose" had also a badge "Volkswagen". |

Is the white car in the background a Chev Constantia or a Valiant? |

@ingo: Are you sure there were never a combinatioon of 'VW*' with '1300' or '1500'? I think otherwise, my sources say '1*00' in 1966 and 'VW1*00' 1967. Some random hits on the net: http://hooniverse.com/2012/06/21/blue-in-the-face-1967-vw-beetle-1300/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/jk1971/7386496160/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/sandertoonen/7546006358/ I agree with DynaMike, 1967 Typ 1 1300 or 1500. -- Last edit: 2012-11-04 14:43:22 |

Now, 4 years later, I know more. I've mixed it up with the VW 1200 from 1966+. There was indeed only a badge "1200". Later on the Beetles had badges with "VW ...." - I should have known that, because I've stolen many of those badges on junkyards in the early 90ies, when 1970ies cars still have appeared then |
