That's such an odd car to appear in London in 1971.

Left hand drive American cars sometimes appear in 1970s Brit shows like The Sweeney, and even in the background of shows like Monty Python, so I assume it wasn't too unusual to them here and there.

Not odd at all, you could buy them new from a handful of London car dealers, what's odd is a 15 year old American car being in mint condition. It would be too new to have been restored and too old to have been especially well cared for.
I'd expect to see rust along the bottom, some missing trim and mismatched paint. But there were a large number of yanks in London during the 1960s-90s being used every day. Fuel was a lot cheaper and parking easier back then.

Plus because the cars were very flashy a lot of gangsters and conmen used to like to use them, if you were a bit dodgy (untrustworthy) chances are you'd have an old Chevy or Cadillac.

Also there has long been in the UK a hardcore of American car enthusiasts who would treat their cars very well - in many cases with a view to hiring them to film and TV companies.
