Cortina mk4? SPU444R is registered to a Ford Escort, so it is not its plate I guess |

It's a Cortina, indeed, a 1980+ MkV ( by the bumpers, the style of the door mirrors and the bigger front indicators ). |

Maybe the same one, in episode 1.05: 00:45:27 |

SPU 444R was a 1977 Ford Escort 1.1 L police car which appears in: The Knowledge (1979) Rough Cut (1980) Hammer House of Horror (Visitor from the Grave) (1980) The Gentle Touch (1982) Dangerous Davies – The Last Detective (1982) and The Jigsaw Man (1983) Also "Death of an Expert Witness", “The Two Ronnies", and “Sorry” -- Last edit: 2022-12-13 23:56:55 |

^ I suspect SPU 444R may be more than one car. Not totally clear but there seems to be a mix between FORD lettering and Ford oval grille badges. Also not sure what to make of the door mirrors - looks chrome on drivers but black on passenger, but difficult to work out if that's constant. |

I believe the pictures in my comment are of the same Escort at different points over a 4 year span. Later Mk 2's were facelifted notably with different badges which at the front altered the appearance of the grille. These grilles and many other parts were interchangeable so it was frequently the case that when early versions suffered minor accident damage they were fitted with replacement parts that were designed for the later versions. I think this is the case here (an "accident" involving this car may even have happened on screen in a movie so far unknown to IMCDb). SPU 444R (as an Escort) only ever appeared with a chrome driver's door mirror-I'm guessing you're looking at the still from 'The Knowledge' where the passenger has his window open and has his elbow resting on the door. This police car did not play a major role in any of these movies. My theory is that the vehicle supplier used by the makers of the above movies knew that they would regularly be required to supply a police car and prepared one especially and hung on to it(it's cheaper to paint the doors white once on one car rather than source a new car and do the same each time). The police signage could easily be removed, I presume, and the car could be used as a runaround between films. According to DVLA the number SPU 444R still belongs to the Escort but it was not taxed beyond 1988. The question is how it has come to be used on a Cortina in a movie made in 2008. SPU 444R still listed as a 1977 Escort 2 door. Maybe a cherished plate (a Spurs fan??) which has transferred but fallen off DVLA. The Flickr pic looks like GL. |

Cortina MkV was introduced in 1979, my 1979 MkV 2 litre GL Estate car JVT586V was conclusive proof. Car in thumb is gold and possibly has a vinyl roof. Ghia has filled-in headrests, GL open ones. If you could get hold of a couple of the fill-in squabs you could make it look almost like a Ghia from the front! -- Last edit: 2022-12-14 12:57:51 |

The Flickr photo seems to have been taken in 2008, so perhaps it was taken while shooting the above scene. I’m guessing the number was not on the car officially and was there to make the car appear to fit in to the programme’s time frame. Funnily enough I once saw a car with the registration SPU5R on the M25 and thought “football fan”! -- Last edit: 2022-12-14 23:43:31 |

/v001544750.html B444 SPU (also a fake plate) on another car. Is this a coincidence? |
