He drove the car on the streets of Mannheim at the same time as Gottlieb Daimler was testing an internal combustion engined motorcycle. These two pioneers are generally accepted as being the fathers of the motorcar. This working replica of the first Benz was made in 1989 by John Bentley of Batley. Should we just list this as a "Benz"? Is "Patent Motorwagen" really a model name, or just a name for the first ever car? Where did 1869 come from? Was it a typo? You are correct. This is not truly the first one (the first was made in 1885), but it is a replica. |
