The coach is a Duple Vega, pre butterfly grille and possibly a Bedford SB.

Might be a JLR 123 plate, = London Nov 47 to May 48 "allocated in blocks". Most other JLx series were London with similar dates, almost all also "allocated in blocks".

May 1948 would be too early unless the number series was assigned to a British Railways contract to be delivered in late 1948 or early 1949.

Scarab 3-ton and 6-ton introduced September 1948; the three tonner had a de-rated engine (and probably a tyre size difference) but I cannot find if the wheelbase was also shorter as on the earlier Mechanical Horse.

The trailer tilt is inscribed “British Railways M”

It looks like the tractor unit may have “M” under its fleet number on the door.

This would indicate that the vehicle was operated by the London Midland Region of BR, formerly the London Midland and Scottish Railway, from 1923 to 31/12/1947. The LMS “Road Motor Headquarters” was at Watford, and the LMR’s continued so to be. Watford is in Hertfordshire, and, in August 1947 the entirety of the JJH series was allocated for their exclusive use to LMR by the Hertfordshire licensing office. The next such allocation was LAR in July 1949, so this vehicle, looking to be JJH, dates between August 47 (too early for a Scarab) and July 49. (Or whenever the office finished at JJH999.)
