@ingo (and all the rest in case someone is interested):

When one is considering to buy a new car there is usually a choise between a few colours that has been decided by some people employed by the manufacturer. Those colours are usually rather few, possibly between five and ten, and even less if it's a cheap car. But if the car is more expensive the choise of colours increases.

When concerning Mercedes there were 28 solid and 14 metallic colours until 1967 and from 1968 there were 30 solids and 16 metallics, some of which were the same during the whole production.
The solid colours were more common on the W 108 and the metallic colours more common on the W109, but any colour could be ordered.

You state that "the defect air suspension is well visible".
I'd say it is not necessarily so as the W108 were fitted with something that was called a BOGE Hydromat which is a hydraulic spring that compensates for heavy load and (intended to) compensate for difficulties in the independent, but not perfect, rear suspension which is of the type pendullum. It sits above the differential.
The BOGE Hydromat is redicullously expensive to replace if it breaks (I've heard figures of somewhere around EUR 5.000) which means that some replace it with the W111 spring. If one does so, the car usually looks like the one above.

If one have a look at the second thumb one can clearly see that the smaller aluminium strips around the windows of a W108 is visible, not those fitted to the W109 /v494300.html and on the third and fourth thumbs one can see that the doors are not long enough.

Dear ingo; I do know that your dream car is a W109 300 SEL 6,3, but I’m sorry to say that all W108/W109 that comes up on the imcdb cannot be of that model, not even of the W109.
If one have a look at the numbers there were in all 383.072 cars made of the W108/W109 series of which 23.550 (6,1 %) were W 109 and 6.526 (1,7 %) were W109 300 SEL 6,3.

The above car is without doubt (unless so heavily modified that identification here on imcdb is pointless) a 1968+ 280 S or SE [W 108].

I think it is an SEL
On a SE both side windows are square and of the same length.
On a SEL the rear window is rectangular and lengthened 10cm
which is quite obviousely by comparing the length of side windows here.
edit: 2nd thumb depicts a W109 by no car color on B pillar but fully chrome with no car color part and as there is no second badge on rear end it is a
300 SEL W109
[Image: thegreatbankhoax1978mkv_snapshot_011540352.jpg] there is a root wood strip framed in chrome on the inner portion of the door which is unique to W109 while the leather seats are available on all other models of course The A Pillar is framed with a single piece of chrome, too.
In any case a W108 could be fitted with 'Niveauregulierung' as zodiac has explained and this car has a Niveauregulierung in working condition:
in one pic there is plenty of space between the wheel arches, while in another there is no space at all! The same effect you can find on a DS
not necesarrily combined with air suspension, but vice versa.

[Image: w109.jpg] those are the frames used here, have to admit silver car color is iritating here a bit.

@ no-a thank you, as it shows the A-pillar is in car color
@ zodiac mea culpa, as it is an SEL by first sight, but mismatched car color with aluminium frame

@no-a: That last picture removes all possible doubt that it would be a W109. If W109 it would have had stainless steel on the A-pillars as well on the side window surroundings.

@andrepa: Also when one look at a rear door of a W108 it looks rather big. One has to be quite careful when looking at pictures as they can be distorted or give wrong impressions, among other things depending on camera angles.
Are you absolutely sure that the rear door are SEL long? I'm not.

Dear zodiac, the parameters to show it is an SEL should be as follow:
On a SE both side windows are square and of the same length at the baseline
On a SEL the rear window is rectangular and lengthened 10cm
It is very difficult to find a SE same POV + other conditions you have mentioned only can be estimated approximately.
The smallest difference in focus angle can exagerate the effect!
And here are the results, the above car is a short one but with big engine a 280 SE 4,5
[Image: thegreatbankhoax1978mkv_snapshot_004709869.jpg]
you will find the red rectangle is allways of the same size, also looking smaller in one case, which is an optical illusion
In 2nd thumb you will see the actor in fond seating in quite a distance!
Yes the door of SE can look big, too. But the proportions are different!
BTW you can anticipate SEL script here.

In case you see just the rear door, the quarterlight is somewhere in the area of 42 or 50% of the windable window frame lenght, respectively
