What happened to it? |

Nothing major that I can remember, the young boy slaps the front of it with a trash can, causing the airbags to deploy, so that the BMW assistant would call to check on them. The boy then persuaded the assistant to start the car. |

Anyone knows if that assistance system actually exist? Can they start a car that way? |

No, it would not work because the moment you hit the front of the car to deploy the airbags so you can get the assistance system to work anyway the system could not start the car because it would shut down completely. Also BMW does not have this system, it's only available in GM cars. -- Last edit: 2007-12-30 07:41:01 |

Hitting that trashcan to cars front, is just not enough to deploy the airbag. I just read my E60s owners manual, and there is clearly told, how hard impact car needs to activate SRS systems: minimum speed in direct hit is about 35km/h, and 20cm "car shortening" is needed to start the safety-system activation (Airbag, emergency seatbelt tightener etc) So, just kicking or slamming the car with trashcan to get airbag come out, is just Hollywood. |

BMW's have a Assist system that when the airbag deploys, the assistant says the name and goes "Mrs/Mr. Are you okay? we are sending an ambulance and we are contacting your family". When the airbag deploys the starter disconects from the engine, battery shuts off, doors unlock, hazards come on, and the assist comes on. The only way to have assistant to start the car is to hit SOS and then tell them the pass code. |
