Opalas(guess a Brazilian way to mangle Opel name)lasted thru 1968 to 1992 PS Were launched at 1968 Saò Paulo M.S. as a locally-made Opel Rekord[C](but rounded headlights make resembles it also the US-made Chevy Nova)fitting Chevy Nova II-based 2.5 lt.powerplant,followed by a 3.8 lt.6 cyl.(a 4.1 lt. Chevy 6 cyl.was available since 1971 and suitable both for sporty Opala,the SS and a luxury-trimmed version of basic Sedan,the former Opala GL=Gran Luxo,renamed since 1975 as Opala Comodoro(name like Commodore for Europeans);at basic 4-door sedan,were added the coupé hardtop and the 3-doors wagon(Opala Caravan)arrives in 1975;that got in 1978 a SS trim(including 4.1 lt.engine),becoming 1st sporty wagon of GM do Brasil,the Opala SS Caravan In the plan to beat toxic gases pollution(and fuel saving)in Brazil,also Opalas later will fit their engines with modification to be alcohol-fueled,available on customer quest(many of them were bought overall by taxists) The Opala becomes also a basis for some locally-realized customizations,like the Opala Envemo(=Engenharia de Veìculos e Motores),got tuning the 4.1 lt.(a "weapon"sometimes raced into national stock-cars races with success)or the 6-lights stretched limousine conversion operated by Sulam(since Eighties'),another Brazilian customizing Firm But if later models switch by rounded headlights to wraparound-squared headlights,Opalas preserve still the typical wawy side line("Coke bottle"-style)of debut until end of production;at Comodoro came added since 1980 a more luxuous model,the Diplomata(like Diplomat),of similar features;later also Caravan body will be available with Comodoro trim,giving life at Comodoro Caravan,and in 1986 gets also the Diplomata trim,becoming Diplomata Caravan Initially,the Opala was targeted on Brazilian market to beat analogue class'cars(at time of launch,1968,its concurrents were the Willys Aero,the Dodge Regente and the FNM-Alfa Romeo JK 2150;but its main rivals on the local market arrives after,being the 1969 Ford(BR)Galaxie 500 and the 1969 Dodge(BR)Dart Into last year of production(1992)was realised a limited series to celebrate the end of production and at customers the car came sold with a gift,a videotape on the history of Opala range(the car will be replaced by Chevrolet Omega,a Brazilian clone of European version,based on coque of 1st gen.,but gifted also with Holden--AUS--origins'powerplants) In definitive,an honest workhorse with a strenghth and known reputation,second in terms of notoriety in Brazil only at VW Fusca(the locally-made Beetle) -- Last edit: 2007-06-24 16:14:58 |
