1979 Z28 ? has the front spoiler, fender vent ( they changed for 1980-1981 ) but hood doesn't look Z28..

This looks like a mutt. Maybe a regular Sport Coupe made to look like a Z28. While it has the 1979-81 Z28 front fenders, it's missing the hood scoop and graphics. The rear spoiler was available on other Camaro models. 1979-only by grille.

I second that. If you look closely at the lower grille, you can make out a small bit of red overspray at the bottom right corner. This likely hints at the bumper coming from a red Camaro, and the entire car having undergone a recent repaint (possibly for the show specifically). The likelihood of the car being a Frankenstein of parts is already pretty high given the state of most Camaros of this vintage, so it very well may be a Sport Coupe/Z28 mutt after all. One thing to note, though, is that it has power windows, which seem to be a fairly rare option on these. Most '78-'81 Z28s I've seen don't even have those.

It’s not the Z28 it’s a 1978 LT 305 with added vented side fenders

Update: There were at least two Camaros used in the second season (I don't know about the third). In the scene where (SPOILERS) Billy almost runs the kids over while they're on their bikes, the car seen has power windows. In the scene where Billy picks Max up from the arcade, the car has manual window cranks on the door panels.

In a scene where Billy leaves the school with a girl, we see a shot with the dashboard in view. It's the rectangular style available only on 1979–81 models.

Since more than one car was used, I doubt the cars are both (or all) identical model years and trim levels in reality. As far as I can tell, the best we can really do is try to make the most educated guesses on what they could be.

One thing is clear: they either are or have been made to look like 1979 Camaros in Dark Blue Metallic (29) with Black standard vinyl (19R) interiors. I'll explain the conclusion of the '79 model year in a bit.

First off, are they base Sport Coupes or Z28s? It's really hard to tell, because nothing really matches. The 1978 Z28 didn't have a front spoiler, nor did it have an updated rectangular dashboard. So as far as I can tell, we can scratch the '78 model year completely (unless one of them is a '78 used only for shots of the exterior).

We can also completely scratch the '81 model year, since Dark Blue Metallic (29) was not even available with a black interior for that year.

So that leaves us with only the '79 and '80 model years... except that the upper and lower grilles seen on Billy's Camaro were only available on '78–'79 models (the '80–'81 models had a different style). Further, the only trim levels that came with black grilles were the Rally Sport and the Z28 (but let's not discount the possibility of them simply being painted black later).

Is it a '79 Z28? Well, all '78–'81 Z28s came standard with black headlight bezels and black trim around the windows. They also came with a graphics package and a hood scoop. The headlight bezels and window trim on Billy's Camaro are all chrome. The graphics package is also missing, but hey, cars get repainted. The biggest giveaway that this isn't a real Z28 is the flat hood (only available with the Sport Coupe, Rally Sport, and Berlinetta).

That being said, what's peculiar is the front fenders with the side vents. These vents with the five openings were only available on the 1978–79 Z28. The 1980–81 Z28 featured a single opening, and no "Camaro" emblems on the fenders. These vents were also functional, which means that the fenders themselves had holes in them. In other words, you couldn't just pop 'em onto your regular Sport Coupe in two minutes. Replacing entire fenders took a lot more effort.

The front fenders, combined with the front spoiler and grilles, firmly marks this as a '79 Z28... so far. But what about all the chrome and the flat hood?

Could it be a Berlinetta? I don't think so. Berlinettas had emblems all over, which are all missing from Billy's. The Berlinetta's taillights also looked different. It being a Rally Sport (only available from '78–'80) is more of a possibility, but those all had two-tone paint schemes. Of course, it's possible that one was repainted for the show... but when we open up the possibility of getting repainted, we also open up the possibility of it being an '81 model of some sort after all.

The best I can conclude is that the cars we see are any of the following:

- a 1979 Camaro Z28, with the hood swapped out for a standard flat hood, and all black trim (except for the grille) replaced with chrome (unlikely)
- a 1980–81 Camaro Z28, with the hood swapped out for a standard flat hood, all black trim replaced with chrome, the grilles replaced with grilles from a '78–'79 model, and the fender vents replaced with fender vents from a '78–'79 Z28 (also unlikely)
- a 1979 Camaro Sport Coupe with added fenders from a '78–'79 Z28 and a front spoiler from a '79–'81 Z28 (most likely)
- a 1979 Camaro Rally Sport with added fenders from a '78–'79 Z28 and a front spoiler from a '79–'81 Z28; repainted in a solid color (also likely)
- a 1980 Camaro Sport Coupe with added fenders from a '78–'79 Z28, a front spoiler from a '79–'81 Z28, and grilles from a '78–'79 model (possible)
- a 1980 Camaro Rally Sport with added fenders from a '78–'79 Z28, a front spoiler from a '79–'81 Z28, and grilles from a '78–'79 model; repainted in a solid color (also possible)
- a 1981 Camaro Sport Coupe with added fenders from a '78–'79 Z28, a front spoiler from a '79–'81 Z28, and grilles from a '78–'79 model; repainted in Dark Blue Metallic OR given a Black standard vinyl interior (very unlikely)

Of course, I'm no real expert on these Camaros and I've only been relying on internet research (period literature available online and Google Images), so if anyone has anything else to add or correct, please do.

Needless to say, the only way we can actually find out the real answer is by contacting the picture car coordinator for the show!

https://www.reddit.com/r/StrangerThings/comments/is7kfk/all_together/ Apparently someone bought this car, along with a few of the other cars. Based on the post, it is a 1979 and was the same car as this one /vehicle_870601-Chevrolet-Camaro-1979.html . This would explain the hint of red paint and the mix of parts considering it hit a tree in The Nice Guys. The front is not only noticeably resprayed, but misaligned and poorly fitted. This leads credence to it being the "Nice Guys" Camaro seeing as the whole front would have been rebuilt.

Definitely based on a 1979 Berlinetta (squared up dash = 79 to 81)
Grille design was changed for 80 and 81 so that makes it a 79.
Fender vents are 78 / 79 style for Z/28 but without the hood scoop they have obviously been added.
Chrome front light bezels were Berlinetta.
Electric windows were standard on the Berlinetta.
Rear spoiler was an option on all models.
