Headlights divided from the grille: it's a 1958 Continental Mk III [68A]. In 1958 it wasn't called Lincoln, but just Continental... |

I thought that only the Mark II was sold under Continental make Isn't that the Lincoln logo in the middle of the rear? -- Last edit: 2007-04-21 00:27:59 |

I've got my infos from "50 years of american automobiles - 1939-1989" (Publications International, Ltd, 1989). They say that Lincoln didn't have a convertible in 1958 for their Capri or Premiere series, but there was a convertible coupe of the 1958 Continental Mk III... In 1959 the Lincoln Continental Mk IV was introduced, also as a convertible coupe, but by then, the headlights and the grille were one piece. So if I'm wrong, my book is wrong... |

It is maybe right, I do not know. But if it is, we should rename the other 1958 Mark III of the site I suppose... |

I loved that book, I had it home from the local library more than the library had it! But where can I find it now? If I remember right it is a good 4 or 5 inches thick! -- Last edit: 2007-04-21 04:32:10 |

Some pictures. I don't know sure, but seems Lincoln managed to keep the Continental as individual. * '58 'Continental' * '59 'Continental' * '60 'Lincoln Continental' looks they gave up |

But there is still the Lincoln Logo on '59 ad, for example |

This doesn't help with later years, but it was nonetheless interesting to find: (if you can put up the thumbnail edit this part out) http://www.fedrelandsvennen.no/amcar/background/bilder/267.jpg |

I do not agree that this is a Continental. In 1958 Lincoln offered 3 series ,the Premiere , the Capri and the Continental Mark III.Continental Mark III was by now just a name given to the top series but was absolutely not classed as a separate vehicle make as the Mark II was , although the sales promotion dept. kept on advertising the car as a Continental. This would led to further confusion ten years later in 1968 when another completely different Continental Mark III( the one seen in French Connection) again was offered as a separate Continental make rather than a Lincoln series. In 1961 , Lincoln went on to call all its regular models by the term Lincoln Continental. So for me this is a 1958 Lincoln Continental Mark III convertible. |
