Despite plate info as 1100, this is a 1300 (as shown by 1275cc) Mk2. Admittedly the first few months of Mk2 ADO16 production created some odd permutations, but these were all rationalised by early 68, with 1300 being the only surviving Wolseley ADO16. Also noted this may have mongrel elements - front wings on Mk2s should have indicators and the trim strips are wrong for a Wolseley. And wheels/hubcaps don't look right.

This one is a bit weird, and I'm not sure how much weirdness comes from a bodged restoration, and how much from it being a survivor from a strange period of ADO16 production during the Mk1/2 transition when several shadow permutations were issued. But we now have a few film sightings of JTK 223G, so it deserves pinning down.

It has an August 68 registration date (towards the end of - but within - the shadow period), an official identity as an 1100 but a 1275cc engine. Visually has the Mk2 cutback rear wings, but no side indicators in front wings (as a Mk2 should have, but not fitted to Mk1 or Mk3). And it does not have the Wolseley arrow pattern side trim, or Wolseley W-embossed hubcaps.

A 2009 Bonham's auction notice has pictures, including
[Image: wolseley1100jtk223g.jpg]
with correct looking wheels, but it looks from the info as if they're similarly confused - "1973 WOLSELEY 1100 SALOON
Registration no. JTK 223G, Chassis no. WAS117410, Engine no. 12HE48105319..... A 1300 version arrived in 1967, at which time the range was face-lifted, and the model enjoyed the status of Britain’s best-selling car for many years. Production ceased in 1974. The vendor advises us that this Wolseley 1100 has been fitted with the later 1,275cc engine and automatic gearbox. Repairs carried out in 2006 included new sills and subframe mounts (see bill on file) and the car is described as in generally good overall condition ..
".

Ignore 1973 - although Wolseley 1300 production ended in April 73, it makes no sense for this car. As the JTK with G plate series was issued Dorset Aug-Sept 68, the DVLA record looks solid. The chassis # beginning WAS11 matches 1100 - 1300s were WAS4 (Sept 67) and then WA4S5 (Sept 68).

The normal version of events is simple - Wolseley 1100 Mk1 to Sept 67, when facelifted Mk2 range arrived and only a 1300 carried on into Mk2/Mk3. But reality is more complicated starting in June 67 when all ADO 16 were still 1100s, as a 1275cc option was announced for Wolseley/MG/Riley/VdP which was to be known as the "1100 1275" but it's very unclear if they made any of these; if they did the bodyworks should have still been Mk1 (upright rear lights, no side indicators). Then the Sept 67 launch with announcements of 1100 and 1300 on Wolseley, and new format wings on all ADO16. But BMC had miscalculated their available supply of ordinary-spec 1275cc engines, so channelled them all into the volume-selling Austin/Morris 1300 Mk2 to keep the showrooms fed. Posh ADO 16s were left high and dry by this - some 1100s continued into Spring 68 in trickles, but no-one bought them as they wanted 1300s now instead of something inferior to the Austin/Morris offerings. Plus there was the chaos of the BMC/Leyland merger to absorb.

So it took until Sept 68 before the posh ADO16s got going again, with effectively a Mk2 relaunch for Riley/MG/Wolseley/VdP, all as 1300 with 1275cc, and no 1100 stragglers. A couple of sources say this was the first time the posh ADO16s were officially called Mk2, although whatever was produced Sept 67 to Aug 68 had the Mk2 body changes.

(If anyone's still reading this and thinks it's complicated, I've actually simplified it, because there were at least 3 specs of 1275cc engine floating around with single or twin carbs for the various failed launch attempts until they settled on the proper specs in Sept 68).

So my best guess is that JTK 223G is a 1968 1100 which should probably be called a Mk2 for simplicity. Unclear if its 1275 engine is a later upgrade or possibly one of the mythical "1100 1275" versions. Its body restoration (in 2006??) has given it the wrong side trim and front wings without indicators, and it may now have strange wheels (as our capture) instead of more plausible Mk2 wheels (as 2009 auction).

And the moral of the story - posh ADO16s between Sept 67 and Sept 68 are a nightmare. But on the plus side, they will be very rare discoveries so we don't need to panic very much.
