Morris is mentioned in the second link as being the chassis of the Pye vehicle. “During the mid to late ’50’s, the Pye Morris based scanners were delivered to Turin, Switzerland, Denmark, and here’s one in Hungary: (Picture didn’t copy) Hungarian Magyar TV’s Pye scanner. ^ "The Mobile Control Room is based on a batch of four Bedford vehicles put into service in 1954.", but I've also seen it described as a Commer. We have several 1955+ Morris FE OB vans built by Papworth, but none apparently in BBC costume. |

I always thought of the BBC / Dinky model as being either Bedford or Commer but this descriptions seems to be a somewhat reliable description here as being a Bedford... https://www.bbceng.info/Operations/studio_ops/studio_ops_top.htm BBC MCR (mobile control room) unit based. "The version modelled by Dinky was on a Bedford chassis. They were probably the Bedford S but were known as "the big Bedford". A batch of four of this design were put into service in 1954 with bodywork by Marshall of Cambridge." edit "Marshall Motor Bodies, Lid., Airport Works, Cambridge. THREE camera units are housed in I the Bedford 7-ton van built specially for the B.B.C.'s outside television broadcast service. Access to the interior is gained by a door at the rear on the near side or two full-height doors immediately behind the cab, which is built integrally with the body. A sliding panel in the roof enables a camera to be operated from the roof which is provided with a rack. A light alloy ladder provides access to the roof from the interior." However they're both incredibly fragile - bits spontaneously fall off at the slightest excuse, particularly for the DS, so 60 year old Dinky engineering for "rich kids" was more successful. |
