BPJ 33 = Surrey Aug-Oct 34. As far as I can tell (basically one book which jfs knows) the only big A-S limos in 1934 were Long 20 (which was big and ... um ... long) and the massive Siddeley Special. So is this just big or is it huge?? |

Not totally convinced this one's monster size to qualify as a Special. Noted that Specials were coachbuilt with umpteen different designs available, so generalisations are dangerous (and Long 20s had lots of designs too), but let's try these 2 observations: - most Long 20s with formal bodies in this little bunch have top-mounted wipers; while these Specials have them scuttle-mounted. - rounded wing ends seem more typical of Long 20s; Specials with open wings seem to have more pointed ends. So with fingers firmly crossed and stroking my lucky rabbit's foot, I vote Long 20. |

My simple approach, production #s: 20hp (all variants) 3850. Special, Mk1 and Mk2, 253. Coming from a family who owned a Whitley and then a Sapphire 346, the Special was always a sort of holy grail, and I have never (knowingly) seen one. -- Last edit: 2021-07-18 08:34:36 |
