Well, this one looks like 1968-1969 owner's custom, probably Standard 'I-wonna-be 1970+ DeLuxe' edition. ![]() Has homemade air vents on C-pillars even! (too low, if you compare with factory fitted cars). Bumpers are coated silver paint, not chrommed as should. |

In the DDR it was very common, that cars, which had a heavy accident or which were rusted away, were re-built on the basis of new chassis and frames (lucky customers could get them as NOS-parts). For that the mechanics used -caused by the well-known supply-problems with all kind of automotive things- parts from different other cars, too. For that reason, you have to be careful today, when you are looking for a car from early DDR-times or from the 30ies and 40ies (at least for all vehicles with a conventional chassis), which have spent their lifetime in the DDR. Such complete reconstructions happened very often. Very tricky are BMW/EMW, DKW/IFA and Phänomen/Robur ![]() |

@ingo will probably remember the website about civilian conversions of Kuerlwagens that someone posted a few months ago. There were Kubelwagen chassis with entire bodies transplanted from little 1930s cars. |

Hmm, this was about an exhibition of cars, selfmade in DDR-times. That some of them were based on Kübelwagen-Chassis, had the reason, that after the war a plenty of them were still standing around. All of those were made by private persons. In my posting above I refer the fact, that until the end of the DDR, NOS chassis and frames for Trabant and Wartburg were (with some luck and good relations) available. This was caused by the always extreme lack of possibilities to get new cars (and the total lack of modern, serious, resp.Western cars). So with a large effort they kept all kind of old vehicles in running condition. After the Wall felt down, these procedures disappeared immediately within days. |
