![]() Crappy 1984 made-for-TV "sequel" to the Steve Martin classic, The Jerk. You'll note that "sequel" was in quotes because this in no way advances the plot started by the first film is in fact an extremely loose remake of The Jerk, starring Mark Blankfield as Navin Johnson rather than Steve Martin. Even calling this thing a remake doesn't quite fit since this time around, Navin never invents Opti-Grab, never ends up at Mr. Hartunion's garage, never becomes a wealthy jerk, and it's a completely different plot altogether. Instead, Navin and Marie already know each other as pen pals and he enlists the help of a group of hobos to stop her marriage to a misogynistic craphead. There's also a musical number which comes in with all the subtly of a sledgehammer. With a rating of only 2.7 from 336 votes in the starkest of contrasts to The Jerk's 7.1 from 63'000 votes as well as a spot on AFI's 100 Years... 100 Laughs list, is it any wonder why this "sequel" is pretty much forgotten? Mark Blankfield is wasted here. You want to see an actual good funny film he headlines, check out Jekyll & Hyde... Together Again. Airdate: January 6th, 1984 |
