directed by one Larry Peerce,

with Richard Benjamin,

(who bears at times a striking resemblance with Rowan Atkinson)

and Ali MacGraw, first strike for this 30 year old model turned actress, playing the part of the 18 year old Jewish princess Brenda Patimkin.

Benjamin and she go well together. But the telling is rather tepid and a bit boring and, well, ugly, beside miss MacGraw (naked! Titts! Two second long!). Too much zooming, too much over-exposure. It could have been a triomphant anti-Love Story—for Philip Roth's story is good and Benjamin and MacGraw are quite good at what they have to do—but, even if the ending is anti-commercial (they won't live happy together forever), the narration has too many kisses in the sunset and walking hand-in-hand-in-the-park, breaking all tension and real emotion.

Besides, it appears that I had the dubious advantage to watch a censored version (or was every final editing of this stuff shortened/censored? It's not very clear to me).

The good thing here is that the movie doesn't try to look hip as The Graduate, and those Jewish families, apart some folklore, are looking quite similar to what must have been mainstream America at this time. There is probably some documentary value here. And actually, enough humour and fine lines to make the viewing entertaining.

A nice traffic light in New Jersey (I guess) night, summer 68, I believe, for rjluna2.

And a lonely Bug up-hill,
[Image: peerce69colombus57.jpg]
for a solitary man.
