No, just the Trabant was mentioned as the 'Alfa Romeo Special' by its owner -- Last edit: 2013-01-04 13:32:35 |

A propos DDR and Romeo: AFAIK there was no Alfa Romeo running there before 1990, but this well known writer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timothy_Garton_Ash was named "Romeo" in the files of the DDR-secret service, because he drove an Alfasud, when he worked in the DDR in the 70ies. The DDR had an own "Romeo"-creation, too. But this was something different. They send well looking snitchers to West Germany, where they macked and sometimes even married lonesome women, working for the government or authorities. |

In Hungary at that time you can buy any western cars if you had enough money (in currency). Some western makes were traded by Merkur (the one and only official company), others imported and sold by independent firms and private importers. Hungarian government was more liberal than the DDR's. I know a Giulia, which has been running in Hungary since the '70s. |

A fact, which has caused big enviousness at the DDR-citizens. |

I'm so lovin' the car-related parts of this movie, especially the funny chase scene involving the beautiful Trabant 601 deLuxe and the Chevrolet. I guess you can't see these cars rivaling in any other movie *spoiler alert* Not to mention which 'won' eventually... -- Last edit: 2013-01-05 23:43:47 |
