This film was inspired by the Jersey Shore Shark Attacks that occurred in the waters off the coast of New Jersey between the 1st and 12th July 1916. The shark attacked five people, killing four of them, it was believed that the shark was a bull shark and that the shark was driven into the waters by the German U-Boats as they were on patrol in the waters off the US East Coast for British Ships as these attacks occurred during World War I. The film also mentioned the sinking of American Portland-Class Cruiser; USS Indianapolis that was sank by two torpedoes fired by the Japanese Submarine; I-58 in the Philippine Sea while sailing to Leyte in the Philippines from Guam in the early hours of the 30th July 1945. Before sinking, the Indianapolis had delivered the components for the Little Boy Atomic Bomb to Tinian in the North Marianas Islands. Out of the ship's 1,195 officers and crew, 305 went down with the ship; leaving 890 men floating in the sea, out of the 890 men left, 316 survived after being rescued by a USAF PBY 5-A Catalina Flying Boat and the US John C Butler-Class Destroyer Escort; USS Cecil J. Doyle with a line of six ships on the morning of the 2nd August 1945. During the men's time in the water, the men suffered from delirium, dehydration, desquamation, hallucinations, hypernatremia and hypothermia, most of the men died from shark attacks while some committed suicide or were killed by fellow survivors. After the rescue, in November 1945, the Indianapolis' captain; Charles B. McVay III was court-martialed for failure to zigzag and failure to ordering the crew to abandon ship, McVay was acquitted of the failure to give the order to abandon ship but was convicted of failure to zigzag but the verdict was overturned after the commander of the I-58; Mochitsura Hashimoto stated that even if McVay gave the order to zigzag, the ship still would've been sunk. McVay retired from the US Navy at the rank of Rear Admiral in 1949, before his death, McVay's father; Admiral Charles McVay Junior stated that his son's court-martial was a act of retaliation as the court-martial was ordered by Chief of Naval Operation; Ernest King who as a young officer while under McVay Jr's command, had a letter of reprimand placed on his record by McVay Jr after King and several other young officers had snuck some women onto one of the ships. The survivors believed that McVay did what was necessary and the court-martial was a disgrace, while families of those who died disagreed and had blamed McVay, he committed suicide at his home in Litchfield, Connecticut on the 6th November 1968. McVay's body was discovered by his gardener, he had his service-issued revolver (the weapon that he used to commit suicide) in one hand and a toy soldier in the other. In 1996, a 12 year-old student from Pensacola, Florida; Hunter Scott chose the USS Indianapolis for a project and after interviewing 150 survivors and reviewing 800 documents, Scott had concluded that McVay was innocent, with help of the Florida Congressman; Charles "Joe" Scarborough, Scott had testified before congress with the survivors and argued that McVay should be exonerated. On the 30th October 2000, the US Congress passed a Sense of Congress resolution that McVay wasn't responsible for the loss of the Indianapolis and it should be reflected on McVay's record, US President; Bill Clinton also signed the resolution, the I-58's commander; Hashimoto had died five days beforehand on the 25th October. Recently, it is believed that one of the female extras in the 4th July crowd scene is believed to be a murder victim known as "The Lady of the Dunes" from 1974. On the afternoon of the 26th July 1974, a 12-year-old girl were walking with her family in the Race Point Dunes at Provincetown, Massachusetts when the family dog wandered off, barking in the dunes, the girl chased after the dog and spotted what she thought was a dead deer, but as she moved closer, the girl realized it was the body of a woman. The victim was found laying face down on half of a beach blanket with a pair of Wrangler jeans and a blue bandanna placed under her head, she had red or Auburn hair pulled back in a ponytail and had pink nail polish painted on her toes. The investigators estimated that the victim was 5'6 (168cm) tall, weighted 66 pounds (145kg) and had a athletic build, she had about $5,000-$10,000 worth of dental work including crowns done in what dentists called "New York style" with several teeth removed. The victim's hands were missing along with one of her forearm, investigators estimated that she was aged 20-49 years old indicating that she was born sometime between 1925 and 1954. Investigators determined that she died two weeks prior to discovery as a result of blunt force trauma to one side of her head caused by possibility, a military-type entrenching tool, it was also determined that she was sexually assaulted after she was killed and that the removal of her teeth and hands were carried out to prevent identifying the victim or tying the victim to the killer. She was also strangled to a point where she was nearly decapitated, as the scene where the body was found showed no signs of disturbance, investigators believed that she knew the killer. Over the years, there have been several facial reconstructions of victim and leads of who the victim was and who her killer was. One lead came from a Canadian woman who stated that she witnessed her father strangled the victim in 1972, investigators attempted to located the woman but were unsuccessful. Another lead came from a woman who stated that victim was her sister who disappeared from Boston in 1974. Another lead was that the victim was prison escapee, Rory Gene Kesinger who broke out of prison in 1973, at the time of the murder, she was 25. It was in this case, on the 31st October 2022, through the same method in the case of identifying the Golden State Killer, the FBI Boston Field Office had identified the woman as Ruth Marie Terry (born 8th September 1936) who disappeared in early July 1974. On the 28th August 2023, detectives from the Massachusetts State Police had officially confirmed that Terry was murdered by her husband, antique dealer Guy Rockwell Muldavin (born 27th October 1923) whom Terry married on the 16th February 1974 in Reno, Nevada. According to Terry's family, four months prior to her death, Terry and Muldavin had visited her family in Tennessee where her family had noticed that Terry "wasn't herself" whenever she was seen with Muldavin and had suspected Muldavin was isolating Terry from her family. According to Terry's half brother, Kenneth and his wife, Carole, both Terry and Muldavin stated that were travelling across the US, looking for antiques, before returning to Massachusetts. After Terry disappeared from the home, she shared with Muldavin in California, Muldavin had told Terry's family that she got involved with a religious cult and had sold her belongings before leaving the state. Investigation into Muldavin revealed that he had criminal record dating back to 1960. On the 30th September 1958, Muldavin married Manzanita Aileen 'Manzy' Ryan in Kootenai, Idaho, before moving to Seattle in Washington State where they set up an antique store. Two years later on the 1st April 1960, Ryan and her 18-year-old daughter from a previous marriage, Delores Ann Mearns had disappeared from their home in Seattle. During the search of their property, investigators found human remains in the septic tank, but couldn't confirmed that it was Ryan and Mearn remains. Muldavin then fled Seattle, but was tracked by the FBI to Los Angeles, California where he was arrested and charged with unlawful flight to avoid giving testimony about their suspected deaths. On 29th July 1960, he married Evelyn Marie Emerson in Kings County, Washington State and then again in Los Angeles on the 10th August 1963. In 1961, Muldavin was convicted of larceny and sentenced to 15 years after swindling $10,000 from Emerson's family around the time the disappearances of Ryan and Mearns, in March 1962, his sentence was suspended by the judge in return for Muldavin to repay the money to Emerson and her family. He was also suspected in the murder of truck driver, Henry Lawrence "Red" Baird and the disappearance of his girlfriend, waitress Barbara Joe Kelley at Eureka in Humboldt County, California on the night of the 17th June 1950.
