Released in 1957 - seems filming started from 1950 and then resumed 1954 before completion. Viewable at http://ssa.nls.uk/film.cfm?fid=2009 . Fascinating footage for me at least - so much has changed in comparison with today, but so much is also still pretty much as it was then.

Any vehicle with BS plates is Orkney issue.

One of the first successful wind turbines in Scotland at Costa Hill, built by John Brown Engineering of Glasgow in 1955 - http://www.orkneywind.co.uk/costa.html - a 100Kw machine, which blew down later in a gale:

Many pics upgraded with better quality version - unfortunately it's a set of 3 clips and the first 4 minutes of the film is not included, so upgrade is incomplete.

If anyone's interested in what Orkney used to look like there's this silent "1959" amateur dashboard camera film - https://scotlandonscreen.org.uk/browse-films/007-000-002-531-c . Probably actually 1960-61 as there's at least one Mini in it, and I think the car used is a 1953-55 Sunbeam Alpine with louvred bonnet - right at the end there is a sunny shot on cliff-top by the derelict WW2 defences (at Yesnaby - one of my favourite bits of Orkney) showing the front of the Alpine in the distance.

Another copy found on a 1-disc DVD compilation of old films The Rugged Islands; full 17 minute version in better quality than the NLS online version, so pics upgraded for the first 4 minutes missing from the Scotland On Screen set of clips.

I reckon that the mail van is a Morris J type, look at the door hinges.

As for the truck, we must be in coachbuilt cab territory here, so Albion, Foden, ERF?
Bearing in mind the location, Albion could be favourite.

Agreed jfs, the 'impossible' mail van at Stromness is a Morris J-type, in addition drip-channel and inner panel side-frame are exactly the same.
