Very disappointing series - just did not work for me. Too self-conscious about Shetland location so lots of clunky dialogue to explain Shetland between characters who were supposed to be Shetlanders, formulaic plot with big holes and characters from a standard menu of cliches, wasted scenery opportunities in making everything grey-toned all the time, and too many Scottish mainland actors so there were almost no Shetland accents. Obviously trying to do a deep and meaningful Wallander, but ended up as Midsomer Murders (Shetland mix). The archaeological plot strand was ludicrous - lots of errors eg overnight c14 dating of human bone, and a dig would provide lots of excavation evidence about how and when a burial occurred which would have solved a lot of this "mystery" very quickly.

I found it okay, if a little bit ponderous, but agree with most of your criticisms. Whatever you think about Douglas Henshall, (I actually enjoy his overacting and find him watchable) a convincing Shetlander he ain't. As for the archaeology, well in the real world it usually takes about a week to get a DNA match but most TV detectives seem to be able to get one in about half an hour.

Sandie wrote And the ferry

That's a trawler (the "Cassandra" shown as bought in 2008 during Ep2 when DH does an online search). Bressay ferry is much smaller - as in 3rd thumb on /vehicle_579536-Subaru-Forester-SG-2003.html - blue hull, white structure, http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/bressay/ferry/images/leirna-450.jpg - was seen a few times. The Northlink ferry to Aberdeen - mentioned a lot but hardly ever shown - http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2791/4167545658_60fcb80e94_z.jpg .

Right now there's running the episode, where the victim drove a yellow Porsche 928,in which he fell from a cliff (scene not visible).
The wreck is obviously a faked 928, as you can see in a scene a distorted chrome trim from the back window.

Series six started tonight. Perez is driving an Audi A4 Avant 35 TDI S line, which replaces the Volvo V90 D4 Momentum he had in the previous series.

I’ve always wanted to go to Shetland because it’s such a nice place

^ It is - highly recommended. If you can go in May or June the daylight is incredibly long, although it won't be very warm. Winter in snow is spectacular, but very short days.

This is ep 2.03 "Dead Water Part 1", first broadcast March 2014. Will post both Dead Water episodes (so Part 2/ep 2.04 as well) to capture the yellow 928, but will not be backfilling any other episodes as they're too grimy in quality and clunky to be worth watching again.

Ep 2.03 reject - digger seen only on computer screen

Some behind the scenes photos from I think series 4. I remember the Honda Civic only appeared briefly, getting wrecked by being rammed on a RO-RO ferry

S7 has 6 eps, all now completely done. I've also added ep 6.05, but no plans to add more from S6.

Stock-take

What we've got/not got:
S1 - was only a single story told over 2 eps
S2 - had 3 stories, each told over 2 eps. I did eps 2.03 and 2.04 to get the story with the Porsche 928s - no others done
S3/S4/S5 - nothing
S6 - we've got eps 6.01/6.02/6.05 but not the others
S7 - now completed with full trawl.

We've got some big gaps which could be plugged. But having watched every ep when it aired, I can't remember anything particularly exciting from the missing eps/series, so I'm not convinced we need to plug them as a priority. If someone wants to jump in - excellent - but if not, the world won't end.

Ep 7.02 end/start of ep 7.03 at the scrappie - lots of glimpses of various Liebherr things - not coherent enough for pages, but here's an overview

Ep 7.06 oddments

- "hire car hatchback" only seen as print-out, but 2[*] significance
[Image: 28-34hirehatch.jpg]
.... small Hyundai??

- epic car chase between Kia Rio, Perez in the Audi, and anyone else who wants to come along for the ride "on the A970 heading South out of Lerwick" but they're actually on the A970 heading North out of Lerwick - maybe they'd have had a better turn out with accurate instructions - it could have become a Shetlandic version of the amazing finale of "Sugarland Express"??

[Image: 19-59group.jpg] [Image: 19-59groupb.jpg] [Image: 19-59groupc.jpg]

Thumbs 2 and 3 are meant to be the same corner  .... I think thumb 3 is a back entry to one of the airports (Sumburgh or maybe Scatsta) with a bit of reserve runway on right.

Yesterday (25 May 2023) they filmed interior scenes for Series 8 in the Lismore (AKA Lios Mor) pub on Dumbarton Road in Partick in Glasgow's West End. This was apparently the 4th time this pub and its traditional "Hebridean-style" interior has been used, with the previous three occasions used onscreen in earlier series; it's one of my locals, less than 5 minutes walk from my flat. No information available on who they filmed yesterday or what happened, but it was all inside with no vehicles involved (apart from a fleet of crew trucks filling the street outside).

First episode of season eight has been broadcast. It’s a bit of a shame Douglas Henshall isn’t there anymore.

Ep 8.01 all felt a bit clumsy - clunky explanations, unconvincing new characters, and re-used some locations from earlier series because they couldn't be arsed to find new ones - the ruined croft where they found a body at the end of the ep was the same ruined croft where they found a body near the end of S6 - the scenes with the blue MG after thumbs 4 & 5 on that page. Or maybe some bright spark will say something in ep 8.2 along the lines of "wasn't that the croft where we found [whatever-her-name-was]'s body a couple of years ago?? If no-one does, then they ain't much use as a group of detectives ...

S8 was dire - a weak plot which kept getting weaker and more trivial so that when the big reveal happened to explain everything, it was pathetic. And parachuting Ashley Jensen in to replace Perez just didn't fit - not quite as bad as when they put Chris Evans into Top Gear but it gets close.
