after some research - it is incorrectly regarded as a goof - citing from http://www.moviemistakes.com/film964/corrections

When Danny and Evelyn are in the Black Cat Diner, a Volkswagen bus goes by. Volkswagen was started by Hitler and not introduced to the US until much later. [The vehicle that drives by has a driver in front, and four rows behind that (with two sailors sitting in the rear). No VW bus ever built was that large. The vehicle is more likely some sort of transit bus.]

some of the replica Japanese aircraft in this movie were originally built for the 1970 film Tora Tora Tora.

complete garbage of a film..Americans cant seem to get their history right in these movies.
Eagle squadron pilots were US volunteers who flew with the RAF..they did not wear US uniform..they came from the US in civillian clothes and were issued when they got to UK with RAF uniforms. In the RAF aerial sequences the aircraft should have "XR" serial numbers to their sides..correct for Eagle squadron, but look closely you will see aircraft with "RF" serial numbers..this is 303 Squardon..a POLISH squadron!!.When the bomb is dropped on the Arizona the path it takes, which the audience follows, is fantasy..it has never been historically established how the Arizona suffered its fatal blow.
The portrayal of Dorrie Miller..the black actor Cuba Gooding....is movie fantasy. In the film it shows him firing at attacking aircraft as they swoop down to deck level between the two rows of ships. At times his machine guns clearly point directly at ships 50 yards away..but as he hits aircraft, not one of his machine gun bullets hits the ships!!..In real life there is no existing record which shows Dorrie Miller (the first black recipient of the Navy Cross) actually shot down ANY japanese aircraft during the actual attack as shown on screen.
During the Doolittle attack at the end of the film we see "dannys" plane recieve multiple hits from the Japanese defenders..which leads to his plane crashing and him being captured. In reality the Doolittle attack caught Japan by complete surprise and little if any Japanese attacks were made against the Doolittle US aircraft.
One of the biggest mistakes in the film is where "Evelyn" intimidates an officer into admitting her into a secure communications centre monitoring the course of the Doolittle raid as bombers attack their targets..in reality she would not have known of the secret raid since none of the fliers themselves knew where they were going until the ship they were on was well out to sea!! and historically NONE of the Doolittle planes had radio anyway...they were all removed to save weight..yet the character "Evelyn" is depicted in the film hearing the raid as it actually takes place!.
The film closes with the President pinning the US DFC on "Rafe"..in reality no President would have done such a thing as in reality he would have recieved the award from one of his own officers.
Truly Hollywood makes movies only to make money...and who cares about historical accuracy??
2012 UPDATE to my original 2009 comment........(Battle of britain sequence in the movie)...two Spitfire XIVs,one Hispano HA-1112,one original Me Bf 109E were used in filming in USA..most of the BoB sequence was shot over the sea in USA as the land in USA looks nothing like anywhere in UK.
The hispano is HA-1112,No. MIL N 700 E belonging to the Air Museum at Chino california, the aircraft suffered damage at Reno races on 18 Sept 1981 and was donated to museum, during rebuild it was given a lower cowling to represent more accurately a WW2 Bf 109, it was returned to the air in 1989.
The Spitfire XIVs are FR MK XIVC NH904/NH4BP from the Palm Springs Air Museum and FR MK XIVE NH749/N749DP based at the Museum of Flying at santa Monica who also owns the genuine Bf109 E,3579/NX81562.

That's why it is a "Movie" and not a "Documentary" [Image: protest.gif]

Indeed. Although you are correct in the inaccuracies that you point out, such comments are better suited for sites such as IMDb. We try to keep it specific to vehicles here.

There is also a Humber Heavy Utility parked behind one of the Spitfires.

Oh and the Spitfires are Cannon armed MK Vs and higher which were too late for the Battle of Britain, but as there is only 1 flying MkII left I suppose we can let them off.

That was movie with huge budget, and it was shoot in CGI-era. I doubt that it was very difficult and expensive to remove anachronistic US ships from picture, made Akagi looks a bit more Akagish, repaint Queen Mary in gray, rearm Spitfires with 303 Brownings...but apparently filmmakers decide, that nobody will notice it. It clearly shows level(if not mindset) both of filmmakers and target audience.
Oh, I just realize, that Spitfire with machine guns wouldn't capable to shoot He111 nose off. Altough nobody will notice...))

Local farmer provided a 1935 Dodge and a 1941 Pontiac for filming: https://cechambers.com/farmers-classic-cars-used-in-pearl-harbor-film/

It appears neither appeared prominently on screen, though.

Never mind the anachronisms in this film. What ticks me off about this film is the fact that Michael Bay directed it. Michael Bay is really not the guy you'd want to direct history/drama movies, because his calling is box-office rubbish, not historical drama.

The Pearl Harbour Attack was committed by the combined force of the Kido Butai (or the Japanese 1st Air Fleet) anchored 230 miles north of Pearl Harbour, the attack force included six aircraft carriers:

Akagi- With 91 aircrafts (66 on deck and 25 reserve) and 1,630 officers and crew aboard with an armament consisting of six 20cm single guns, six 12cm twin guns and 14 twin 24mm guns.

Built as a Amagi-class battlecruiser 6th December 1920, launched as a aircraft carrier 22nd April 1925 and commissioned in the Imperial Japanese Navy on the 25th March 1927, refitted three times from the 24th October 1935 to the 31st August 1938, later took part in the successful Invasion of Rabaul from the 23rd January to February 1942, killing 34 personnel from the Royal Australian Air Force, Australian 2/22nd Battalion and the New Guinea Volunteer Rifles and taking 1,000 as POWs (all were later killed in the sinking of the Japanese POW ship; SS Montevideo Maru, sunk by the US submarine; USS Sturgeon on the 4th July 1942) and later, the bombing of Darwin City in the Northern Territory of Australia on the 19th February 1942.

Hiryu-

Kaga-

Shokaku-

Soryu-

Zuikaku-

five A-Class Midget Submarines (the I-16, I-18, I-20, I-22 and I-24)

Despite the destruction caused at Pearl Harbour, it wasn't a success for Japan, one of the Japanese main targets; the US Aircraft Carriers weren't in the harbour, both USS Enterprise and the USS Lexington were at sea, delivering aircrafts to the US bases at Midway and Wake Island while the USS Saratoga was in drydock on the US West Coast.
