| 1929 Austin 16/6 'Fabric' saloon The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971) |
sixteensix ![]() | Thank you Sunbar for putting in a couple of the pictures which I sent through. The top one is from 'Hercule Poirot's Christmas' and the second one was from 'Perfect Hero' - The episode of Mapp and Lucia was 'Lady Bountiful' - if that's of any help. I am desperate to obtain a copy of 'We The Accused' as the 16/6 played a major role as a Police Car up in the Lake District. When the car was returned to me it looked a wreck as it had been involved in several mishaps whilst in their 'care' - I also found out later that it had been used as the unit's 'hack' - never again! One other T/V programme to add to the above list was 'Holding On' made back in the early 1960's for Thames Television, where the car was used to 'knock down' one of the characters. Cheers for now. Sunbar ![]() | Thank you Jim. It is always interesting to hear from the owners of vehicles appearing in movies or other programmes. This is Jim Stringer's (sixteensix) Austin as seen on the set of the TV series 'Poirot' and 'Perfect Hero' (with headlamp blackout covers)... ![]() Other films and TV productions in which the Austin 16/6 has appeared: One of Our Dinosaurs Is Missing. 1976 [Gangster’s car – not seen] Star. 1967 [Street Dressing] We the Accused (TV) [Police Car]. (I would like to obtain a copy of this) Mapp & Lucia. 1983 (TV) [Bishop’s Car]. Poirot (several episodes) (TV) [Taxi, Funeral car, Dressing] Perfect Hero. 1991. (TV) [Dressing] Hanover Street. movie 1979 – [Street dressing/traffic] (Harrison Ford misjudged his timing when running across the road and knocked into the car as it was passing. The language was ‘colourful’ – no damage to the car. The Abominable Dr Phibes. 1971 [Police car] Dr Phibes rises again. 1973 [Police Car]. The Charmer. 1987 (TV) [was meant to be part of a funeral cortege, but threw a rod on the way to the location, but they still used the car as ‘dressing’] The Toy Maker. 1965 (TV) [Minor star’s car] Funny Man. 1981 (TV) [Funeral Car] The Patriot Game. (TV) [Dressing in garage] The Medusa Touch. 1978 [Dressing - not seen] I will add a listing in the 'Poirot' series as it used by the main characters, adding a screen capture when it becomes avaiable. Also it should be possible in the future to add more. Particularly listings can be added for 'Hanover Street' (1979) and 'Mapp and Lucia' (TV series) as they are sometimes repeated on television. |

sixteensix ![]() | Hi Sunbar, after several unsuccessful attempts to send some photographs of my 16/6, I sent them as an attachment via e-mail to the web master. He has promised to send them onto you, and select a couple for the web site. best regards. Jim. |

sixteensix ![]() | Hi Sunbar, I shall sort out a photo or two of my 16/6 and (if I can find out how you post them) I shall put them on this page within the next day or two. I used to do a lot of filming with my car, but whilst it was great fun, and you got to meet a lot of interesting people, it was very stressful. I believe the 16/6 (RX 4740) has appeared in over a dozen films and TV productions - but the best one has to be 'Hercule Poirot's Christmas' when it was used as a 'Taxi'. Cheers for now. Sunbar ![]() | Hello Jim, do you have any pictures you can post here (as Imageshack/thumbnails)? The screen capture from the movie does not do you car justice I think, although I think I have probably seen it shown on the Vintage Austin Register's website. |

sixteensix ![]() | Yes, this Austin 16/6 belongs (and still does) to me and was purchased for £35 in 1962. Filming Dr Phibes was great fun and there were a number of scenes in which it appeared. The rear axles was changed within a couple of days as the Film Company wanted it for continuity within the week (It was a Police car!). The Headlamp shows the dipping system in use at that time (I have not changed it and always passes its MOT), where one goes out and the other dips. Jim Stringer (Vintage Austin Register) |

| 1926 Austin 12 'Clifton' Tourer The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971) |
sixteensix ![]() | The leading car is a 1926 Austin 12/4 'Clifton' Tourer, which at the time of the filming was owned by a Mr R.Fagan of Iver Heath, Buckinghamshire. The car was actually first registered in Jersey and when the Island was occupied by the invading German army - it was considered far too old for their use and so escaped being commandeered. The filming took place within the grounds of Haberdashers Aske Girls school at Elstree and the car following is my own 1929 Austin 16/6 'Fabric' saloon. The owner had entrusted his car to me and so I had to drive it home together with the 16/6 - I drove the 12 and my heavily pregnant wife drove the 16. However about a mile away from the location the planet gears in the rear axle of the 16 gave up and I then had the problem of getting not one but two cars home. I drove the 16 (it was just about drivable) and my wife drove the 12. She was frozen as the 12 was an open car - the date? 10th December 1971! | 2009-10-20 19:34 | |
