Mack NM 6x6 - Snow Plough
The Big Freeze of 1963 Remembered (1963)
JCB UKWell done Sunbar that badge bit was bugging me , I was wondering if the 'clearest' H was for Hendon !

Other thing , these were not 'left behind' by US army as stated by Commercial Motor.
They were supplied under lend lease to the UK, we finished paying for them in 2006 !
The British army had many as artillery tractors and also the Ministry of Supply had a big fleet with tank transporter trailers delivering tanks throughout UK and driven by civilian drivers. There was a good tale from an ex MOS driver in one of the classic truck mags few years back.

Mack NM 6x6 - Snow Plough
The Big Freeze of 1963 Remembered (1963)
Sunbar UKConverted vehicles were introduced after the 'Ice Age' of the winter of 1946-47.

The Ministry of Transport sought suitable types of heavy equipment and the Mack 170 bhp six-wheel-drive petrol-engined chassis was decided upon. Numbers had been left behind by the U.S. Forces, who had actually demonstrated the efficacy of Mack snowploughs for clearing aerodromes.

Both the Ministry and local authorities bought Macks and Ministry engineers collaborated with manufacturers on the design of high-wing plough attachments.

Link to "archive.commercialmotor.com"

Many of the canvas-roofed trucks were modified to a full steel cab design after 1955.

England had 156 of the Mack type. In Scotland there were 130 Macks and in Wales 18.

The Big Freeze of 1963 Remembered (1963)
Sunbar UKThe split-arrow Clearway sign was for the initial trial on certain trunk roads in the UK. The current sign was introduced after the movie in 1964.

"Clearways were first introduced between 1959 and 1960 and initially had a different type of sign to what is used today - https://www.flickr.com/photos/40910684@N04/23357269353/ . The early experimental lengths were on a number of radial roads leaving London, notably the A12, A20, and A23. The experiment proved successful and the concept of clearways was expanded and made a formal part of the new traffic sign system in 1964, when the familiar symbol still in use today was introduced."

Also there were possibly two such snow ploughs in use at the scene as one seems to have a number plate on the grille and the still photograph is without one.

dsl SXAlthough commentary says Southern England, I think they've slipped in some Swedish footage for maybe 15 seconds - https://youtu.be/pMXxRcqmrkQ?t=208 . This freeze was a weather event across a lot of Europe, and Sweden was still a RHD country in those days. Other cars in the sequence look like a Beetle, maybe an Opel and a Fiat 500; there's something going past in opposite direction between the Volvo and this bus which might be Vauxhall Velox [E]. So the mix of cars is not specific, although the possible Opel would be unusual here.

But the giveaway is this sign

The Big Freeze of 1963 Remembered (1963) the sad biker UKI was "work in progress" at this time so my only real experience of a harsh winter was 67-68, we had the only car on the street that would start in the mornings (an oval window Beetle), Mam used to wrap the engine with a blanket every night (it worked), the street echoed to Cortina/Hunter/Anglia/1100 starter motors getting slower and slower and.........

The best place in the world on a frosty morning, climbing over the back seats onto the engine cover, almost instant heat, VW heat exchangers? an oxymoron, what heat?

The Big Freeze of 1963 Remembered (1963) johnfromstaffs ENI remember this well. A group from my school, including me, went to Davos, staying in the “ touristenlager” of the Hotel Schatzalp. Quite a catalogue of firsts for a Fourteen year old kid at the time. We went by train across France through Metz, and along the ultra engineered “Rhaëtianbahn”, and were supposed to fly back to London on a Douglas Dakota, but due to the snow, flew back by Bristol Britannia to Manchester. My first experience of flying and also of being away from home.

That winter we were able to cut about a mile off the school’s short cross country route by running across the frozen Trent and Mersey Canal just before the aqueduct over the River Trent. Nobody drowned but many were perished.
