Jack Nicholson driving his 1967 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible. This photo was taken by Arthur Schatz for "LIFE" magazine in 1969 when "LIFE" did a feature on Nicholson at his new home on Mulholland Drive (between Beverly Hills and Studio City), a house he still owns. Interestingly, his Volkswagen would later appear in the 1978 Cheech and Chong movie "Up in Smoke." It even had the same license plates--which is unusual since most license plates on cars in films or television are fake. What was the connection? Probably that Lou Adler, the director/producer of the film, is Jack Nicholson's best friend. They are often seen together courtside at Los Angeles Laker games. Even more curious is that the car came up for auction in 2013 (still with the same plates--UQE 765) and was advertised as the "Cheech and Chong Up in Smoke car." No mention of Jack Nicholson ever owning it--which really surprised us. The winning bid was just $5,225.![]() |
