Why not? BMC, like all the rest of the British car industry, was pushed by the government to sell as much abroad as they could. My perception of the situation is that Austin's was rather better at it than the Nuffield part of the conglomerate, who tended to concentrate upon the Commonwealth countries, apart from the very successful Minor, which sold everywhere especially after it was uprated with the 1000cc engine.

Admittedly, it does look a bit plain and dumpy, surrounded by two-tone Simcas, but the later A55 was a bit of an improvement. Morris, although generally better specified and certainly technically better in the steering and suspension design, offered the very plain Jane Oxford in 1955, not at all appealing to continental mind sets IMO. Having driven both, the Morris interior was much better, and it certainly hung on in the corners which the bouncy coil sprung Austin didn't, but externally it was no showroom star.
