unsuccessful replacement for the Ford Capri..there must be fields full of these unsold somewhere in the UK..i only ever saw 3 examples when new..although now (2007) they are reaching classic status, theres still not many about and they are cheap, under £1000...the one in the picture probably has less than 10 thousand miles on the clock. |

After this series, sales of the heinous Probe were decimated because of Coogan's despicable Gareth Cheeseman character. (Source: Steve Coogan, before his 'Star in a Reasonably Priced Car' turn on Top Gear (qv). |

Wasn't it based on a Mazda originally? Still see one running around here in Hull (England) sometimes. |

Yes, both generations of the Probe were based on the corresponding generations of the Mazda MX-6 (they were also built in the same plant, if I'm not mistaken). |

Thanks Hecubus, I thought it was Mazda-based but couldn't remember which one it was |

I remember enough of around in the 1990s, though they did get a "Yuppiemobile" image. I still see 1 or 2 about these days. |

John S, you're perfectly right. It was based on the Mazda 626 and assembled somewhere in the USA. |

Not very often that Ford have a failure, but when they do..... I remember going to an event put on by motor traders to encourage employees of the local authority who had leasing packages available to sign up for new cars. There was a huge queue to drive this heap, my mate and I ignored it and spent the afternoon in various Alfa Romeos and a Land Rover. As mentioned above, the Probe has now sunk without trace, you don’t see many Alfa Romeos with the big V6 either. |

I recently met a Fiat Croma with the Alfa Romeo V6. That's something really rare |
