Rare footage of a Lanchester car going up a flight of steps at Crystal Palace, London. It was shot in 1904. |

Another background car from the same scene probably also a Lanchester. |

The Lanchester was probably near new at the time. |

Agreed it was filmed for publicity purposes so was almost certainly a 1904 model. |

In 1904 the first vertical four cylinder Lanchesters were launched , rated at 20 hp.( over square 2471 cc).The other model was an 18 hp water cooled twin of 4073 cc.With the publicity purposes it may be a 20 hp tourer. |

A similar registration 'O 166' to the car in the episode still exists and is a 1901 Lanchester. http://www.svvs.org/brighton2/1901_Lanchester.jpg . However I think the probability is still that this was a new car when it was filmed in 1904. |

Not arguing with the ID as it matches commentary, but it's a strange plate - O or 0 above LR-6. OLR was 1954, plain LR was July 1916 to July 1918, so I don't think it's a proper number plate. Agreed - it's fottage taken at Crystal Palace, scene of the first motor Show in 1903. O LR-6 comes by first, followed by the second car with possibly a red-on-white trade plate starting with A then 3 numbers |

O LR-6 is a General Identification Mark (fore runner of a trade plate) allocated by the County Borough Council of Birmingham (Letter O), to the Lanchester Company (LR) in 1904. Full information on the formats of trade plates from 1904 to 1999 can be found in Mr Newall's book, on pages 47 to 49. -- Last edit: 2017-03-22 21:56:39 |
