Isn't this an OY and not an MW? |

yep..dual rear wheels indicate the 3 ton OY...the MW had single rear wheels. |

And a canvas-roofed cab. How come nobody altered this in fifteen months? (I only noticed it when looking for a date for another MW.) |

Civilian 5-tonner 1941-45 Bedford OWL not military Bedford OY 3-ton (or later conversion) despite the military appearance. Also on later Bedfords if civilian spec vehicles were used in miliary applications the civilian model name applied. /vehicle_430919-Bedford-OY-GS-1939.html . Absence of low pressure tyres with the military type wheels and ride height given by the different springs/suspension as here /vehicle_48186-Bedford-OYD.html. -- Last edit: 2015-02-08 12:01:33 |

After more research regarding Bedfords military trucks 'OY' and civilian use 'OWL' I think a better identification is possible. By the Bonnet side ventilation grilles this is an early military truck as used by the British Expeditionary Force in France before the Dunkirk evacuation in 1940. Early OY trucks have side grilles that are horizontal and not angled in line with the bonnet top (also probably with mesh grilles not slots). Left in France during the evacuation. Both normal twin-rear and military type tyres/single-rear arrangements were used in the early part of the war, probably due to limited resources and the later standardisation on military truck design by Bedford and the war department. https://www.flickr.com/photos/seacoaler/11960970623/in/photostream/ "BEF Bedford OY 3 Tonner GS 2nd DIV 2 Field Hygiene Section Very early Bedford OY 3 tonner with civilian style wheels, twin rears, ... in France in awful conditions, winter 1939/40" https://www.flickr.com/photos/seacoaler/11965066305/in/photostream/ Compare with later OY trucks and the angled slotted grilles used from the 1943 movie 'The Gentle Sex'. Early Bedford MW 15cwt trucks appear to have angled grilles with mesh inserts. https://www.flickr.com/photos/seacoaler/11961196433/in/photostream/ -- Last edit: 2015-05-04 12:42:29 |
