Yes, the name 'Defender' came into use in 1990. This is a Land-Rover 109" Series II or IIa introduced in 1958 or 1961 respectively. |

Features very early wiper motors (SI type), but also doesn't have wing nuts on the windscreen hinge inside (which it should probably have). Can't see if the vent operators are late or early properly, but I think they are the early (screw-in) type. |

I can date this one fairly closely I think. The individual wiper motors (the ones fitted are replacements from a series 1), the wire spoked steering wheel and nut type windscreen clamps show this to be a 'B' suffix Series 2A and that means it was built sometime between 1963 and 1965. This is also supported by the dual trailer lighting socketson the rear. The registration is almost certainly false as I've never seen a military Land Rover with painted numberplates, plus the rear plate should be a three row plate mounted on the right where the red & green square has been painted. To give the vehicle its correct military title it is a Truck, 3/4 Ton, GS, Cargo, 4x4, Rover 9. |
