Why not Boxer or Jumper?

Still playing dice rather than really identifying, mike962? ;)

1994-2006 Sevel van (it): 1994-2001 Type 230 / 2002-06 Type 244. And as usual, I'm not sure that picking one make randomly can be claimed to be a serious identification...

so how about new rule for this van

if no badge visible to ID them they are all X by default ?

This would work if there was a generic name. A randomly chosen make + model, even if done only once for all, would still give 4 out of 5 (1st gen. of Sevel Sud vans) or 2 out 3 (2nd gen. and above) wrong possibilities. A margin of error of 80% or 66%: who could seriously call it an accurate identification?
An impossible to identify tag would be more relevant, as it would be nothing but the truth.

there is another option

how about if they are named SEVEL model SUD (since they are produced in Italy) if no badges for ID visible ?

It would be more or less my choice (Sud is in fact a part of the name of the Val Di Sangro factory, not a model name), but I'm not sure that all other admins, including the Master of the Jedi masters, are really keen about semi-official makes :D
Remember that Sevel is "just" a joint venture between Fiat and PSA...

eLMeR wrote .... semi-official makes

I can see why it would be convenient here, and can think of other possible examples where semi-official makes could be useful. But it has 2 big problems if they were allowed:
(1) imcdb has to cater for newbies who fly in from nowhere and look for things without any knowledge of special systems. That's our purpose.
(2) even if semi-official makes were allowed, they would be long-running problems. What happens for instance in 5 years time, when the people who invented the semi-official make and its rules and definitions may no longer be watching? The future imcdb folk may not realise/understand what today's people have done.

So we have to keep things as simple and straightforward as possible for now and the future. Default IDs are much more likely to provide continuity.

Hence the usefulness of keeping written records of "naming rules" somewhere in the forum, for example. There is too much "unwritten rules", I think.
Anyway, making a proper identification is already a mess, all the more when admins try to keep as much consistency as possible while validating the proposals of some contributors ;)

But not accuracy, which should also be one of our purposes...

then by default make shouldn't it be FIAT DUCATO for the simple reason that being build in Italy it would be more accurate than Jumper/Boxer ?

it's no point flooding this in unknown section just because you can't see badges to ID them even if we know what it is basically

we can go thru the unknown VAN section and just name all of this Fiat Ducato

Seems sensible as a plan. But I don't have the model knowledge to confirm approval, so second confirmation would be useful

So we should name them Ducato even in French movies?

mike962 DE

2015-07-26 22:11

why not, they are sold there too as Fiat

Sounds like the worst of all worlds to me, either pick the most common on a case-by-case basis (location* or application) or just name the impossible to identify ones as Sevel. I'd go for the second, TBH, but it doesn't seem like a popular idea.

* Not always that obvious. France and Italy would be easily decided but other countries (like the UK) have much more of a mix.

Not so easily indeed, I don't have numbers sales for Italy and although of course Fiats are more common rather than French twins, especially with last generation of models also Citroens and Peugeots versions now are quite common here.

Or you can choose the German way: throw a coin and pick the third choice.

Without a Vans, Pick-up class, the Trucks, Simple truck one is certainly the closest one can find in the IMCDb :)
