Why precisely 1967?

"E" suffix registration numbers ran precisely from 01/01/1967 to 31/07/1967. The suffix then became "F"until 31/07/1968, and so on. The change date had originally been 01/01 of each year, but the manufacturers said that the change was causing bottlenecks and the authorities changed the date for the new letter to August 1st in 1967. So you can date any vehicle registered in GB, not UK because Northern Ireland had a different system, if you allow for the fact that I,O,Q andZ were not used, and remember that the whole thing was turned back to front in 1983/4 and the suffix became a prefix. The system finished in 2001 IIRC.

The new system is completely different, the year can be told from the numerics in the plates, ie 14 equals March to end August 2014, 64 equals Sept 2014 to end February 2015.

If you want to try this site - http://www.oldclassiccar.co.uk/registrations/reg-letters.htm - it works pretty well for most AB 1234, ABC 123, and the early ABC 123x combinations until maybe 1972 (where x=K) - enter it through the BC part of the registration if it's an ABC. Anything before 1929 can be difficult as records before then were not centrally compiled and there were lots of local quirks. jfs and I have various books which can be more precise (I can say for instance this is a July 67 plate) and are better for some of the strange permutations.

Also has the wide front wings to cover the wider 5.5T axle, first shown at the Earls Court Show in October 1966

PS 'Sunbar', the Mk.2 cab appeared before the Borderer et al: it was first shown a the 1967 Kelvin Hall Show, and went into production late in 1968. Salisbury reg on this one, I think?
