It was, at the time of the crash, it believed that Hawthorn was overtaking a Mercedes-Benz 300SL when he lost control of the vehicle and crashed. |

Even if Hawthorne hadn't died in this crash, he sadly wouldn't have lived for much longer anyways; he had already had one kidney removed due to an infection in 1955 and by the time of this crash, the other one was on it's way out. He had recently started suffering fainting spells and some have theorized he lost control of the Jaguar due to such a fainting spell occurring as he was overtaking the Mercedes. Poor guy was only 29 It's a rather strange twist of fate that he accidentally caused the deadliest crash in racing history and ended up dying in a car accident himself. |
