G152 FTH Probably a fake plate, because there's no info for it. |

It looks like a real combination, and I've ran plates that were very real on DVLA where the info was deleted for one reason or another so I wouldn't assume fake. -- Last edit: 2021-07-24 01:32:47 |

Both Jxxx CUW and Gxxx FTH are series which were never issued, so screen fakes. At one stage in the 1990s DVLA used to provide lists of unused series to TV/film companies so they could create "safe" fakes. British Telecom used to offer dummy phone numbers - for instance for signwriting on trucks and vans, or any other plot purpose - and there were lists of dummy internet addresses. I guess all these are still available for producers. One tip which can be useful if a plausible plate doesn't show up is to try a few numbers near it (so for G152, try G150, G151, G153, G154 etc) to see if there are any hits to confirm if the series was genuine. If no hits after a few tries, it's a good clue for a fake series. Don't test this here, as Jxxx CUW and Gxxx FTH never existed. The intriguing thing here is that a 91/92 car was scrapped for a 93 film - seems unnecessarily extravagant, unless as sometimes happened, car makers would provide pre-pros/development cars for deliberate scrapping - either they had non-homologated specs or other differences which the car firm did not want to see enter the market. Rumour has it that many new car launches are accompanied by destruction of maybe 20-30 prototypes which look perfect, but are "wrong" and therefore can't be legally sold. Usual policy is to discreetly crush them, but they're sometimes passed over to film/TV suppliers for them to destroy onscreen. |

I assumed it was a real plate (fits with the 1983 system) that was simply taken off the DVLA as it was permanently put out of use. |

Somewhere, I think we've got a red(?) late 80s or 90s(??) Vauxhall Astra seen in a scrapyard which would have been brand new for film date, and the discussion explored these ideas. But I can't find it .... |
