I like the way the plate (631 AHA = end 55 Smethwick) matches the route number, but at the rear

it shows a different route number.

Same coach and position in Leicester bus station at 00-08 as the film opens, but only this glimpse

... which sets up another common cliche in these 1950s documentaries - introduce a bewildered and lost black gentleman

Anyway back to the coach - Leicester was Midland Red territory

1957 BMMO S15 Fleet No. 4631

The registration number was allocated in 1955 but the buses, 601 - 650 AHA were not constructed until 1957. Not actually a coach, more of a bus with dual purpose seating and a higher axle ratio, although turned out in the company's coach livery of Black over Red. In the manner typical of the Red, which did everything differently, this is another of their home built buses. A second batch of 48 was constructed in 1962, but the entire class of 98 vehicles had disappeared by 1973.

Plate is definitely 631 AHA - Smethwick, where BMMO built their creations - Link to "www.flickr.com" - but seems May 57 - Link to "www.buslistsontheweb.co.uk" - with S15 starting in Apr 57.

Not quite. The company's head office and official address was in Smethwick, but the engineering and body works was in Carlyle Rd Edgbaston Birmingham, which suburb, as well as being home to the Warwickshire County Cricket Club, was also the place of my entry into the world.

Two buses visible in the garage, a D7 and a C2. The Red had a simple code for its postwar own built vehicles, S for single deckers, or saloons as they were known, D for double deckers and C for coaches. By far the most innovative, and probably the most eccentric of the large bus companies, the Midland Red had 500 home built underfloor engined single deck buses on the road before Leyland or AEC had got beyond prototypes.
