An anecdote on how was chosen the name of that car: 'Cause Mr.Alejandro De Tomaso had proposed years before the smaller Vallelunga GT(1965,Ford Cortina-Lotus 1.6 lt. powered,so-named after a small racing circuit in Rome)was come the time to offer something of more bigger at customers(especially those Yankees)to face the concurrent Miura 400 GT of Lamborghini;so,the new V-8 Ford-powered De Tomaso car was realized initially as show-car in 1966(style but if attribuited to Ghia was really layouted by a young Giorgetto Giugiaro when he wasn't still the boss of future--1968--Italdesign studio and was a learner near Ghia coachbuilder)and named,non-casually,Mangusta(=mongoose,in Italian)'cause that roditor was famed to engages struggles with snakes, killing them(got the message???De Tomaso would "kill" the sales of similar-powered Ford Mustang Shelby Cobra with that car,so the name was allusive for that aim!);then, the car was launched for regular production later in 1968 and lasted since 1970(for make way to brand-new Pantera, just launched that year,as replacement of it) |
