As affluent as the family seemed to be, I'm surprised they only owned Oldsmobiles since they were the entry level luxury car for GM. They seemed to be more on a Cadillac level, but still these cars are gorgeous. |

Back then was Buick considered more luxurious than Oldsmobile? |

Yes. I believe the "hierarchy" of GM vehicles at the time was, in order from entry-level to flagship: Chevrolet, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Buick, Cadillac. Chevrolet was the entry-level, "discount" brand, Pontiac was a step-up, making semi-luxury and performance vehicles, Oldsmobile was considered an entry-level luxury brand, Buick was a mid-level premium luxury brand, and finally, Cadillac was considered the high-end flagship luxury brand. Oldsmobiles were ultimately utilitarian in that they weren't a flashy luxury car, but conservative styling for people who wanted something to be a step-up from Chevy. |

I love this car. I remember it from when I watched this movie circa 30 years ago. I didn't catch that Donald Sutherland's character had an Olds too, and thus the family bought two similar ones in the same year. Hmmmm. I know it's likely just a sponsorship thing, but for the sake of character development...maybe the family were lifelong Oldsmobile devotees, and the mom's character was sick of station wagons and neither spouse wanted one of the smaller models. |

Wealthy people who wanted the luxury of a Cadillac (and could well afford it) often chose a Buick Electra or Oldsmobile Ninety Eight. Some weren't always comfortable with the image that a Cadillac might project with friends, relatives or business clients while the Regency wouldn't seen as self-indulgent and showy. Two very similar Oldsmobile models (the Delta 88 Royale Brougham sedan & Ninety Eight Regency sedan), both new cars within the same household does seem a bit unusual however. |
