The Daimler Conquest/Century (4 Door Saloon) was available with a pre-select or a fully automatic gearbox, 6-cylinder 2.5 litre engine. I owned a Conquest/Century (due to I believe 100 bhp or the ability to achieve 100 m.p.h.) Bought in early 1971 for £40.00p with an automatic gearbox, which was rarer than the pre-select version. Reg. No. - TYL 155 Registered - LONDON (YL) sometime in 1957?, (someone out there will know) Colour - Midnight Blue (solid, not metallic paint) Interior - Midnight Blue leather upholstery, Walnut Dash. I had an 8-track tape player fitted in the dashboard, with 4 speakers one in each door, all made by Voxson of Italy, and marketed in UK by Rank Audio Visual. The in car system cost me more than the Daimler!! I was 22 at the time, and could record my own favourite music on 8-track blank tapes, and play them in "INTREPID" which I named my Daimler. Favourite track played was Jimi Hendrix Experience "All Along The Watchtower" with all the stereo phasing going on..... Took a holiday trip in her down to Cornwall in Summer 1971, and was amazed whenever I passed the same model going the other way, the driver would lift their hand and give a cheery wave, nearly always older gentlemen drivers 50+. I responded with a wave back, and wonder what they thought of a young long-haired man with a light beard driving this classic Daimler. I still have the old green log book somewhere, and INTREPID bit the dust in 1972, when I moved onto a Mini 850, YLE 878 in Cooper colours, Ford Aubergine, with a black roof...... happy days.... |
