old wheels, short wheelbase. The double hedlights mean not much.

It has the 1968+ grille for sure, and I also believe it has the shorter rear door (like here http://www.dyna.co.za/cars/Mercedes_Benz_71_108__280SEYBlack_sf1.jpg ).

This is likely a 1968-72 Mercedes 280 S or SE.

To who ever called this a 1969 Series II:

I don't know if the MY 1969 is because of the licence plate. If so I have nothing to add.
If not, I believe I should write somewhat about the Mercedes models.

Mercedes did largely use the same model names for a long time, and to be able to make any sense one has to refer to bodies rather than only the numbers (which only tell the size of the engine in litres x 100).
In the mid 50's Mercedes thought the Ponton models (W 120, W 121, W 105, W 180 and W 128) were out of fashion and decided to replace them with a model loosely based on American fashion, the fintail models (W 110, W 111 and W 112). They were such a change concerning build Mercedes decided to change the work shop manual, the spare part books and the manuals at the same time and because of that they are not rarely referred to as the 1959 models.

Unfortunately the fintails were soon out of fashion, and to try something new Mercedes first used the new design on the coupés and convertibles (W 111 and W 112), the luxuary model (W 100) and the sports car (W 113), all built in less numbers than the volume models, until they finally decided to use it on a bigger model. That model became to be known as the W 108/W 109 but was esentially a lower W 111 without the fintails, where the W 109 was a stretched W 108 with air suspension.

Towards the late 60's the fintails were very much out of fashion, and it was decided that also the volume models should do without them. Thus the W 114/W 115 was introduced in January 1968 (preproduction models were made a few months earlier) also with change to all other models. This was such an important date it was decided the work shop manual was to be revised again, and the models became to be known as /8, short for 1968.

On the W 108 models, the visible changes are a different hub caps, slightly different grille, other door mirrors, minor changes to the interior and (if looking closely) diffrent engines (the 250 engines were replaced by 280 engines).

By writing this, I'm not saying I'm an expert, but I have to know all this, and much more besides, to be able to find spare parts for a 1967 250 SE [W 108.014] I'm in charge of.

I rather believe this is a 1968-72 Mercedes 280 S [W 108.016] or 280 SE [W 108.018]. I haven't heard of anyone else referring to them as Series II.

No indeed we don't use the mk field for Mercedes-Benz. Must be an error
